No animosity as Chatteris fighter Jordan Gill and Zelfa Barett meet ahead of World title eliminator

The mutual respect was there for all to see when Jordan Gill and Zelfa Barett met at a press conference ahead of their world title eliminator.

Two of the UK's top super featherweight boxers, the pair face off at AO Manchester Arena on April 13, with the winner getting a shot at the ultimate prize.

Speaking at the event, both men heaped praise on their opponent, while host and promoter Eddie Hearn said: “Sometimes you see a fight on paper and think it is the obvious one to make. They both want a shot at the world title and they’ve decided to give us a treat and make a 50/50 domestic clash.

“This is a fantastic British clash that is going to lead one of these two to a world championship fight.”

Gill said of Barrett, who has already competed and lost in a world title fight: “Zelfa is a very good fighter and probably at the front of the queue for a world title shot and I’ve got to beat him to leapfrog him.

“As soon as this fight was mentioned, I said ‘yes’. I am excited about it and looking forward to it and so is everyone else.

“To be the best you have got to beat the best and to have a claim at the world title you have to go through these nights.

“My team at the moment is the best I have worked with, the way they analyse everything and then make it very simple for me.

“All you want as a fighter is a clear game plan and that’s what I’ve got. I knew exactly what I had to do in my last fight against Michael Conlan ( a seven round TKO in Belfast) and I know what to do for this fight too, but it’s very different.

“Zelda has a lot of strings to his bow, he is a very versatile fighter, he moves very well, punches hard, has fast hands and can stand there and swing it out as well so it’s a very different fight and I am going to have to come out differently than how I did against Conlan.

“But I am excited about the challenge and I am excited to show my versatility as well.”

Since moving up from the126lb featherweight division to become a 130lb super featherweight, Gill has a lot more punching power, as shown in his demolition of Conlan. He added: “You are going to see the best of me now, I am coming into my prime. I feel good, I’ve got a great team.

“I just couldn’t perform any more at featherweight and it’s so frustrating because I know I’d be so much further along in my career if I’d have moved up sooner but I was always chasing that carrot being dangled in front of me.

“I am happy, I am enjoying my training and I’ve found my love for boxing again. I’ve got a lot of things going on that I am really excited about and this fight is just one of them. Let the good times roll.”

The two fighters have similar records with 29-year-old Gill recording 28 wins from 31 fights with nine knockouts, two losses and a draw, and 30-year-old Barrett 28 wins and two defeats from his 30 fights, with 16 knockouts.

Both boxers have held Commonwealth and European titles, and Barrett fought for the vacant IBF World super-featherweight title in November 2022, losing by technical knockout to Shavkat Rakhimov of Tajikistan.

Barrett told the press conference: “This is like another world title fight for me because I know how good Jordan is. We’re similar styles.”
