Paine brace for Wisbech slays Dragons
Wisbech Ladies 2
Norwich Dragons 2nds 1
The tone of the game on Saturday was set in the opening seconds as Dragons were down to 10: a green card for deliberately kicking the ball away.
Wisbech had numerous opportunities and eventually were rewarded when Sophie Culshaw played a quick ball down the line to Charlie Leuty, who pulled the ball back for Charlie Paine to put in the back of the net.
Norwich stepped up their pressing but could not find an opening goal and the half finished 1-0.
The second half was all Wisbech but they saw a hatful of chances go begging. Against the run of play, Dragons converted a penalty corner.
Wisbech were awarded a contentious short corner, won by Verity Allen, in the final minutes. A well-worked routine saw Laura Overland lay the ball back for Paine to score her second.
Wisbech deservedly took all three points to maintain their second position in the table
Next week Wisbech are away to Cambridge City 2nds, 2pm push back.
Long Sutton 4
Wisbech Ladies 2nds 0
Wisbech travelled feeling optimistic but found themselves a goal down early on in the first half when Sutton pounced on the ball after stand-in goalie Ali Mason had saved a shot but couldn’t locate the ball to make the subsequent clearance.
It felt as though Wisbech were stronger in possession but just couldn’t create any clear-cut opportunities, whereas Sutton seized on their chances and went into the break two goals to the good.
Wisbech continued to play some decent hockey in the second half. Their best goalscoring chance came when Sue Robinson and Alice Salmon combined but could only hit the post. The formidable Sutton keeper Lorraine Wallis kept all other efforts at bay and the hosts added two more goals, ending the game worthy winners.
PoM: Youngster Becky Coleman had a really good game.
Next weekend Wisbech are home to Pelicans Ladies 1sts, 4pm push back.
