Poor start continues for Chatteris
Chatteris and Wisbech 2nds both sit in the bottom three of the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire League CCA Senior League Division One after winless starts to the season.
In our featured game on Saturday, Chatteris lost by 73 runs at home to Royston and Wisbech were beaten by 146 runs by visiting City of Ely.
After electing to field, Chatteris saw their visitors put 224-9 on the board from 45 overs. Anthony Bamford took 4-52 from nine overs, Peter Munns 2-46, and there was a wicket each for Billy Munns, Shimron Thomas and James Fraser.
In reply, the home side managed 151-9 from their allotted overs, Billy Munns top scoring with 36 not out, Adam Whiting hitting 27, Ben Hollis 19, James Fraser 19, and wicket keeper Connor Morton 15.
In the game at Wisbech, visiting Ely elected to bat and scored 218 all out from 44.1 overs, Joe Dunning taking 3-35 off nine, Ellis Brodie and Adam Gardner both taking 2-37 and Joseph Broomfield and Jack Woolard both 1-31.
In reply, Wisbech were all out for 72 from 19.5 overs, opener Thomas Hoyle hitting 47 without any meaningful support.
Wisbech’s first eleven fared no better, losing by eight wickets at Copdock & Old Ipswichian. After deciding to bat first, Wisbech lost opener Danny Haynes for five, but a decent partnership between other opener Gary Freear (54) and wicket keeper Josh Bowers (31) saw them reach 54-2.
Freear and Ryan Clarke (57) then put on 102 for the third wicket before Freear was caught behind. Clarke soon followed, but knocks of 39 by captain James Williams, 12 by Jonny Garner and 11 not out by George Gowler took the final score to 237 all out from 62.2 overs.
In reply, the home team raced to 240-2 from 47.4 overs, Freear taking 2-46 from 10.
In the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire League Whitings Division One Red Ball, March lost by six wickets at Southill Park. After electing to bat, the visitors scored just 155-9 from 55 overs, opener Sam Robinson (45) and Will Steventon (47) putting on 71 for the second wicket.
Nofal Raja (11), wicket keeper Lewis Welcher (12) and Shae Pooley (14) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures.
Southill reached 159 for the loss of four wickets in 40.3 overs, Pooley the pick of the bowlers with 3-47 from 12 overs.
In the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire League CCA Senior League Division Two, there was also defeat for March 2nds, beaten by 43 runs at home to Wilburton.
The visitors were asked to bat and scored 245 all out from 43 overs, before dismissing March for 202 from 43 overs.
There was defeat too for Wisbech 3rds, who went down to a 193 run defeat at Burwell & Exning 2nds in the CCA Junior League 3 North. After deciding to bat, the home side put on 244-3 from 40 overs, wickets going to Colin Freear (1-24), Oscar Smithee (1-28) and Henry Gowler (1-32).
Wisbech’s reply was poor and at one stage they were at a dismal 8-6. Only captain Tom Buck (18) and Amber Crossley-King (12) reached double figures as they were bowled out for 51 off 13.4 overs.
In the same division, Chatteris 2nds conceded their game at Wilburton 2nds.
In 4 North, Wisbech 4ths suffered a heavy defeat, beaten by 10 wickets at Haddenham. After electing to bat, Wisbech were bowled out for just 46 from 25 overs, only captain and opener Martin Woollard making double figures, hitting 12. The home side then raced to 50 without loss from 9.5 overs.
