Every peg was taken in the Kingsland big lake for the ninth fishing of the Craig Kent Memorial drawn pairs match, writes Ken Wade.

Top pairing on the day were Des Proud with 90lb 4oz and his partner Adrian Hunter on 45lb 6oz, which gave them 18 points.

Runners-up were Ben Darrington with 107lb 4oz and Pete Chilton 32lb, 20 points, weight countback and third were Dan Hall 108lb 8oz and Den Ward 29lb, 20 points.

On the individual front Ian Darrington had a fantastic catch of 225lb 8oz, followed by Tony McGregor with 113lb 4oz.

Some £505 was raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. A special thanks must go to Richard and Teresa at Kingsland for all their help and Ray Best at ukmatch angler.com for generously sponsoring the event. Thanks also to those who helped make the match a most enjoyable day once again.

With only a few matches left to qualify for the £1,000 fish-off later in the month Rookery Waters is starting to attract a few new anglers and in the Saturday £1,000 qualifying open on the Magpie Lake those taking part had a fantastic match with 14 weights over 100lb recorded.

Taking the honours in this match was Steve Freeman from peg 17, who caught steadily all day in the margins with various hook baits to catch carp up to 7lb for a stunning 217lb 11oz.

Runner-up was Tony Dawson. From peg 34 he caught shallow on banded pellets before catching on maggots in the left-hand margin for 205lb, with Gavin Butler third on 194lb 8oz.

In the Thursday £1,000 qualifying open on the same pool Graham Welton continued his excellent run of form winning with 128lb 6oz. Runner-up was Kevin Shellie with 106lb, followed by Vinny Easy on 102lb 14oz.

In the Wednesday over 60’s open on Jay Lake Ramsey stalwart Keith Rayment took a comfortable victory with 149lb 2oz. Ray Pullman came second with 111lb 2oz, followed by Pete Holland on 97lb 10oz.

Another local rod in fine form this year is Mac Campbell. He just cannot put a foot wrong this season with Fenland Rods and on Sunday drew the fancied Golden peg 15 at Frasers, Ely, and comfortably won the match with a level 85lb taken on the pole with meat and maggot. Runner-up was Tony Nesbitt, who fished sweetcorn to finish on 48lb 8oz, then came Paul Smith with 44lb 4oz.

Sport is on the up on the North Level Drain as the roach start to show as seen in the recent results from Tydd Gote AC. In the Wednesday match Mick Asker put 9lb 14oz of roach to the scales, then came Andy Greenwood with 8lb 12oz and Ian Benton on 7lb 14oz. On Sunday Andy Greenwood put a fine net of red fins to the scales, all taken on hemp seed, weighing in 11lb 1½ oz. Chris Lynn came close on 9lb 15oz, followed by Rob Wright on 8lb 7oz.

The Cuckoo Canal Pool at Townsend Lakes continues to fish really well. In the latest fishery open match Ricky Young topped the field with 159lb of small carp taken shallow with maggot. In second place with 127lb 10oz was Del Maginn, followed by Jordon Osbourne on 107lb 14oz.

Spratt’s AC found the pegs at the top of the lake in a feeding mood, Lou’s lake producing some fine weights on the Decoy complex. Top rod with 139lb 13oz from peg 6 was Trevor Cousins, who caught on a pellet waggler. At the next peg was Peter Spriggs, who weighed in 134lb 11oz catching well on pellet and paste. Then it was Mick Raby third on 86lb 4oz.

John Clarke topped the field in the latest Buttonhole Tuesday match, finishing with 104lb of carp taken from peg 4, with the majority caught on paste at 10 metres and some better samples from the margins on meat over sweetcorn. Les Barry came second on 105lb, followed by Andrew Carter with 99lb.

It’s still tough going for those fishing the Chatteris Workingmen’s Club matches at Horseway, although last week’s winner Steve Newell did manage to catch a decent bream in his net of 8lb 2oz. John Roper came second with 3lb, followed by Chris Gubler on 1lb 12oz.

Thursday Evening Match July 28, Black Dyke: 1 Ian Benton 5lb 1oz, 2 Andy Greenwood 4lb 13oz, 3 Rob Wright 4lb 13oz.

Sunday, Main Road: 1 Andy Greenwood 11lb 1.5oz, hemp roach; 2 Chris Lynn 9lb 15oz; 3 Rob Wright 8lb 7oz.
