Pre 1990 Unlimited Banger Testimonial in King's Lynn honoured Maarten Steenbekkers in one of best races for years

The word 'epic' can be overused to describe many sporting events, but no other superlative comes close to describing the Pre 1990 Unlimited Banger Testimonial event which took place for Maarten Steenbekkers last Saturday in King’s Lynn.

Social media has been flooded with comments following the incredible event, which many have described as the best banger racing event to have taken place anywhere over the past 20 years.

From the drop of the green flag in heat one until the chequered flag fell in the Destruction Derby, there was non-stop incredible action which personified the career of Steenbekkers - who was competing in his final ever event.

Three local drivers were in action in the shape of Nicky Young, Joe Geeves and Kevin McClagish.

Young was exceptional in his veteran Wolsley 6/110, and he earned himself an entertainer award in a fantastic race which was held for Pre 1970 cars.

Steenbekkers has a reputation for not going past cars without taking them out in true banger style, and Young had certainly read the script as he delivered several rated shots en-route to winning his award.

Joe Geeves was also in great form in the Mk2 Granada Limo, which he managed to get his hands on late in the day.

Geeves put in a superb performance and was involved in a big sequence of hits in his first heat.

He exchanged a handshake with Sam Coote following a particularly big exchange during the day.

Kevin McClagish was also heavily involved in the action throughout the afternoon in his Mk 9 Jaguar.

All in all, it was a very successful day of racing in honour of someone who has always proven to be a popular driver.

There is no race action at King’s Lynn this weekend, with the next meeting in a big sequence of events being the 2L Banger World Final.

Racing will also come from the 2L Stock Cars and Lady Bangers at upcoming events.

If those races are as exciting as last weekend's, fans will be in for a treat.
