Fenland teams ready for 'Champions League' action

Two of the groups in new ‘Champions League-style’ county competitions will be made up exclusively by Fenland teams as the football season gets ready to resume.

With the Cambridgeshire County League being declared null and void after no games since before Christmas because of Covid-19, the competitions will take place from April 10, as the Government’s roadmap to normality kicks in.

The league has organised three cup competitions to run until early June, all marking the 30-year anniversary of Kershaw Mechanical sponsoring the league.

AFC Walpole (pink) will be one of the favourites to lift the Cambs League Intermediate Cup.

The Kershaw 30 Year Senior Cup will consist of teams from the Premier Division, Senior A and Senior B leagues, the Kershaw 30 Year Intermediate Cup will contain teams from Division One and Two, with a Kershaw 30 Year Junior Cup for the remainder of the leagues.

With the competitions starting on April 10, the regionalised group stages are planned to run until the second week of May, with the quarter-finals on the third week and the semi-finals on the final week of May.

Finals are planned to be held at Newmarket Town on June 4, 9 and 11, with fixtures to be released shortly.

In the Junior Cup, Group B is another all-Fenland affair, made up by Christchurch, Benwick Res, Doddington Res, Fen Tigers, Guyhirn Res and March Academy Res. Chatteris A are in Group J.

The group winners plus six best runners-up qualify for the last 16.
