Wisbech Town Hockey Club played its last two friendlies on Saturday, before the East League begin this weekend.

The Ladies 2nds suffered a 2-0 defeat at Pelicans 1sts and the Men's 2nds beat St Ives 3rd 7-1.

The Ladies travelled to King's Lynn for this pre-season game against Pelicans, who will be competing in the league above them this season.

From the off, Wisbech came out very strong, putting much pressure on the Pelicans defence. There was some great movement on and off the ball in all areas, resulting in several penalty corners for Wisbech. Unfortunately, they could not find the back of the net.

Some lack of concentration defensively allowed the home team to break and score twice, once in each half, which was disappointing for a Wisbech side who felt they were the better team for much of the game.

Captain Ali Mason said: "We played some very good hockey in what is a new formation forus. We just need to have a little more aggression and commitment in some of our challenges, develop our confidence on the ball, and perhaps improve our game awareness with our final pass, sometimes giving the ball away in crucial areas.

"All of this will come, and overall, it was a great effort against tough opposition."

Having gained promotion as champions of Division 4NW last season, the Men's 2nd are looking forward to their new challenge in 3NW, hosting Newmarket 1sts at Harecroft Road on Saturday, 3.30pm push back.

In their final pre-season friendly, they put down a marker with superb flowing hockey from start to finish against St Ives 3rd. The whole team played well and the goals were taken well by Gary Freear 2, Calvin Bishop 2, Josh Porter 2 and Ryan Jackson.

They are away against Leadenham 1sts on Saturday.
