Captain Wadsley is Round Table man of match

Wisbech Wildcats 2nd XV travelled to Peterborough II for a friendly match and the visitors won 12-34.

Wisbech used the match to give game time to a number of young players who have been performing well in the Wildcats as well as players returning from injury.

From the outset it was clear that Wisbech would be playing against a strong, experienced Peterborough side who had clearly played together a long time.

The match started off in a very physical manner with both sides hitting each other hard in the tackle.

After the initial barrage, it was Wisbech who came out with the ball, quick hands putting Raimondas Vinskas over in the corner for the first of his two tries. Young Zak Lakey was given another run at scrum-half, taking over from the experienced Andy Claydon.

With Claydon moving to fly-half he showed his class by slotting over a neat drop-goal when he had the chance to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

It was another young player – Dan DiMeo, who really showed his pedigree at this level with a fantastic solo try, showing his pace down the wing. This was further added to, as a clever kick from Raimondas Vinskas put him in the corner again.

With a number of new players coming on Peterborough were able to score a couple of tries of their own and start to give Wisbech a worry about a comeback. However Henrikas Stankas ran an excellent line to score under the post for the Wildcats for the final points of the match.

Returning from injury after eight weeks, club captain David Wadsley was warrior throughout putting in some big tackles and carries to be awarded the Round Table Man-of-the-Match.

After the match Wildcats skipper Olly Mackett commented: “It was really pleasing to see the coaching staff message coming through the club as a whole. Lots of younger players stepped up to the mark and in a short space of time are buying into Wisbech pattern and shape

“It important that we continue to build and take that positive momentum to Norwich on Saturday.”

Wisbech Wildcats are away to Norwich 2nd on Saturday in a friendly, KO 2pm.
