Wisbech St Mary match leaders Great Shelford before late penalties seal defeat




Wisbech St Mary lost 3-1 at home to Cambs County League Premier Division leaders Great Shelford on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Shelford took the lead only for Tom Lindsay to equalise for Saints. The home team matched the league leaders but conceded two penalties in the final 15 minutes. Chris Gunkel was man of the match.

Saints are still second from bottom but took plenty of positives from the performance.

March Town Reserves still lead Senior A after a 4-3 home win over Eaton Socon Reserves, their goals coming from a Connor Bancans penalty for his 12th of the season, Adam Mills, Keaton Smith and sub Liam Monaghan.

The Hares had trailed 2-1 at the break but went on to lead 4-2 before conceding late on. Manager Kieran Daplyn said: “Eaton Socon were unbeaten in the league. They’re a very good side but we deserved it after a really good performance.”

In the same division, Wimblington went down 3-1 at West Wratting Reserves, Sebastian Goldspink netting his tenth of the season for the visitors.

Outwell Swifts suffered a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Exning United in Senior B, with both goals for Swifts scored by Adan-Jay Lewis from penalties, taking him to 17 for the season.

March Town United A went down 4-3 at Alconbury, Helgi Danielsson, Luca Middleton and Fyn Smith netting for The Hares. Chatteris Town Reserves were beaten 3-2 at home to Stretham, Charlie Munns and sub Bradley Dean scoring for The Lilies.

There was also defeat for Benwick Athletic (Christchurch) who went down 3-2 at Eynesbury Rovers Reserves, Archie Cullum and sub Taylor Harvey on target.

Wisbech St Mary Reserves are through to the semi-final of the William Coad League Cup after a 1-0 win at Manea United in an all-2B clash, Tristan Jones scoring the all-important goal.

But in the quarter-final of the John Ablett Cup, an all-3B clash saw Wisbech St Mary Development A lose 4-3 on penalties to Swavesey Institute Reserves after a 2-2 draw. Callum Taylor scored both goals for Saints to make it 14 for him this season in just seven games.

AEK United of Guyhirn go top of 4C after a 2-0 win at Huntingdon United Reserves, Kensey Carter with his tenth of the campaign and Joseph Wheatley scoring. They are a point clear of Wisbech St Mary B, who beat visiting Ashdon United 6-2 in the Third Round of the Reg Haigh and Arthur Peck Cup, with braces for Ethan Goodale and Robert Harris and Stuart Beckett and Lee Chapman also on target.

Fourth-place March Academy won 2-1 at Peterborough League Division Two side Leverington Sports Reserves in the North Cambs Junior Cup, Barry Brooks and Jack Conyard scoring for Academy.

Wisbech Town Acorns lost 3-0 at Stretham Reserves but Wimblington Reserves are through to the Fourth Round of the Reg Haigh and Arthur Peck Cup after a 3-0 penalty win at 4B high-fliers Bar Hill, following a 1-1 draw. Jamie Whitehouse scored for Wimblington.

Manea United Reserves lost 2-1 at Brampton and Buckden Reserves in 4C, Shane Knight scoring, and Outwell Swifts Reserves were thrashed 6-1 at Needingworth United Reserves.

In the Premier Division of the Peterborough League, Leverington Sports crashed 6-0 at Warboys Town, while in Division One Wisbech Town Reserves were beaten 7-0 at Peterborough Rangers and Long Sutton Athletic went down 4-0 at Whaplode Drove Rovers.

Sutton Bridge United won 2-1 at Thorney in Division Two, Sam Cooper and Mark Garner on target, but Tydd went down 2-0 at Bourne Town Reserves.

Marshland Saints beat Aylsham Reserves 6-0 in Division Three North of the Anglian Combination.
