Saints boss: 'We got caught cold'

Wisbech St Mary’s Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Division One North season got off to a disappointing start on Saturday.

Saints included new signings Joe Tarris, Liam Fryatt, Danny Setchell, Bradley Lake, Dale Parnell and Ryan Lennon.

However, they found themselves 3-0 down in the first half and, despite pulling it back to 3-1 and 5-2, were deservedly beaten. Saints scorers were Matthew Harris-Hercules and Lennon.

Disappointed manager Stuart Beckett said: “We got caught cold. We’re a new team and there were some nerves but we need to wake up and smell the coffee.

“Needham Market are a well drilled outfit and they punished us. The scoreline did not flatter them.

“We’ve learned that we cannot just throw a team together and get results – we need to graft and work hard.

“The goals we conceded were sloppy too and that’s been a theme during pres-season, and for the last two or three years really.

“There’s some great players in this league so it’s okay if you concede really good goals, but not the soft ones we’ve been letting in.”

Beckett said one bright point was the form of young substitute Marley Barrett, who played well.

On Saturday, Saints travel to play promotion hopefuls Lakenheath, before entertaining Downham Town on Wednesday, September 16 and Sudbury Reserves on Saturday 19.

“Lakenheath are a really good team but we’re expecting to go over there and put on a much better performance.

“Downham are a good team too but you have to play everyone at some time so we just have to do our best.”

Wisbech St Mary: Tarris, Willmott, Lake, Goult, Beckett, Fryatt, Lennon, Setchell, Parnell, Harris-Hercules, Sewell.

Subs: Barrett, Carter. Not used: Bass, Bishop.

Attendance: 41.
