Outwell Swifts heading for another season of glory
It could be another season of glory for Cambridgeshire County League side Outwell Swifts.
The Swifts, who pulled off the treble last year in manager Jason Day's first season in charge, are undefeated in division 2B, and still in the final of the Creake Charity Shield and semis of the Cambs Junior Challenge Cup, both of which they won last season.
And after Saturday's 9-2 victory at bottom club Wisbech Acorns, fifth place Swifts would leapfrog leaders AFC Walpole if they won their three games in hand.
In horrendous weather conditions, depleted Acorns had fought back from 2-0 down to find themselves level at 2-2 after an hour but when their energy levels dropped, Swifts pounced, with Jack Brand, Aaron McKenna and Luke Plumb all grabbing hat-tricks. Brand is now up to 13 goals in 14 games this season. Mario Santos and Lewis Holmes netted for Acorns.
In the Cambridgeshire Junior Challenge Cup quarter final, AFC Walpole enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Swavesey Institute of division 1B. On target for the Honey Badgers were Lewis Clayton, Antonio Matos and Joe Reed, with Lucas Ablett named man of the match. Also in 2B, Wisbech St Mary A lost 3-2 at home to Soham United Youths.
In the Cambridgeshire County League Kershaw premier division, second-from-bottom Chatteris Town went down again, this time thrashed 7-0 at fourth place Eaton Socon.
In 3B Guyhirn United stay in top spot after turning in a superb defensive performance to beat St Ives Rangers Reserves 1-0 at home, Robert Hitchcock scoring and Joshua Bothamley man of the match. March Academy are second after a 2-1 win at fourth place Benwick Athletic, Kyle Bird scoring both goals.
In division 4C, AFC Christchurch Magpies stay top after a 2-1 victory at Witchford 96 Reserves, Dale Richardson and Lewis Hearn scoring in the first half. March Academy Reserves were thrashed 9-1 at home by Fen Tigers Engineers, whose marksmen were Jack Davis (3), Alex Stewart, Dale Saberton, Rueben Beaney, Scott Boswell, Lee Ransome and Robbie Ryan. Zach Mulholland was the Academy scorer. Benwick Athletic Reserves went down 2-1 at The Isle.
It was not a good day for our teams in the Peterborough League premier division this afternoon, with Leverington Sports beaten 3-0 at home to Thorney and Tydd going down 2-1 at home to Oakham United, Jordan Clow netting for the home team.
In division two, Leverington Sports Reserves went down 5-3 at Crowland Town Reserves, with Levvy scorers Shaun White (2) and Phil Large, while in the third division Parson Drove Reserves drew 0-0 at home to Farcet United.
In division 5A Long Sutton Athletic A beat Parkside Reserves 4-0 with Ryan Alexander netting twice, Mark Garner and an own goal completing the scoring. In 5B Sutton Bridge suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Rippingale & Folkingham Reserves, Lee Still and Mitchell Bunn netting for the Bridge.
