Wisbech Grammar School’s hockey and netball teams crowned regional champions and reach national finals
There was double delight for Wisbech Grammar School’s hockey and netball teams.
Their U18 boys' hockey side was crowned East Regional champions with the National Finals being held on March 24 at Reading Hockey Club.
Meanwhile, WGS’s U11A team has qualified for the national stage of the netball IAPS qualifiers on March 20.
The U18 boys were crowned regional champions at the East Tournament at Redbridge, Essex, on Thursday. The first match was against Stamford School who they played and beat in the first round of the cup, just before half term with 5-0 win.
Their second opponent was Spalding Grammar School. This was a really close game with both sides playing well. James Kerry made some excellent saves to keep the scores level. But just before half time, WGS found the net after a great counter-attack. Spalding then levelled after a slip in concentration.
It was very tense throughout the remainder of the game with lots of great hockey on display. WGS missed several shots which took the final score to 1–1.
The third and final game was the most competitive of all with a lot at stake for the boys. The game started with Hitchin applying early pressure and moving the ball around very well. In the last two minutes of the game, WGS won the ball and drove it into the circle and put it on the foot of a Hitchin defender. The final whistle went and WGS pushed all their players up to the circle with clinical precision hitting the ball through the GK’s legs to win the game 2-1.
Andrea Glover, head of hockey, said: “Winning this final game enabled WGS to be crowned East Regional Champions 2020, they now progress to the National Finals on 24th March at Reading Hockey Club. This is a huge achievement for the team as this has not been accomplished at the school for many years. Everyone at WGS is incredibly proud of the team and we can’t wait for the finals.”
Players in the team from Wisbech: Ross Clarke, Jack Robb, Tim Bateman, Josh Porter, Josh Bell.
The Wisbech Grammar School U11A team played in the U11 IAPS netball qualifier at Uppingham School on February 27. The team played in a pool stage first, beating Gresham’s Prep 4-3, Stephen Perse Prep 10-0 and drawing with Leeds Grammar 5-5.

The WGS team played some fantastic netball but unfortunately, they lost to Wellingborough School, coming second in their group.
The team then played in the quarter-final against Bablake. This was a closely fought game, with both teams playing excellent netball. Despite having to play extra time, the players for WGS kept their nerve and went on to win and progress to the semi-final.
They lost in the semi but came fourth overall; this means they qualify for the national stage of the competition which is played at Bryanston School in Dorset, on March 20.
Head of netball Sam Goodier said: “This was a fantastic display of netball by our young netball players. They showed a great amount of skill, sportsmanship, and determination.
“They played for each other and the teamwork was outstanding. We are very excited to move onto the National Finals, which is an event the team has not played before; I am so proud of their achievements.”
