Springwood edge out Marshland High in King’s Lynn district basketball tournament
Just before half term, Marshland High School entered two teams into the Under 12’s basketball tournament.
A massive thank you has to go to Cameron Lawson who came to coach one of the teams as without him the West Walton-based school would only have been able to enter one team. Some 13 of the 14 players who played that night were making their debut for the school basketball team.
The A team were one game away from becoming District champions. They had gone through the tournament unbeaten going into the last game and they took on Springwood. A good start and a basket from Kristers Skriban meant Marshland went 2-0 up, but Springwood scored three late baskets to win 6-2.
In their first three games before that game, the team beat KL Academy B 12-0, Smithdon (Hunstanton) 8-2 and then drew with KLA A 4-4, after that three more wins followed against KES Academy B 8-6, the eventual champions, KES A, 10-4 and Marshland B team 10-2.
That meant that the A team fantastically finished in joint second place. Players of the tournament were Kaspar Adomavicius, who score 20 points, and captain Ben Dear, who scored 14.
The B team were even less experienced than the A team but they played very well all night finishing in fifth place out of the eight teams in a brilliant performance.
They started with a 2-2 draw against Smithdon and a fantastic win against KES B 6-2 with Bento Rodrigues scoring all six points. They then lost 4-0 to champions KES A followed by two excellent draws against KLA B and Springwood, who finished joint second.
They finished with defeats to Marshland A team, although at one point they were 2-0 up and had the A team panicking, and to KLA A 6-0.
Players of the tournament were Aidan Cook, who scored six points, and Bento Rodrigues, six. The whole team worked so hard.
