March Town win to stay top of the table but Wisbech Town lose on penalties in the FA Vase and Parson Drove beaten in the league
March beat Bugbrooke St Michaels 2-1 at home this afternoon to stay top of the United Counties League Premier Division South.
But Wisbech Town crashed out of the FA Vase, beaten 4-3 on penalties at home to Tividale after a 2-2 draw, and Parson Drove’s fine run came to an end with a 3-1 defeat at Swaffham Town in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League First Division North.
March played out a goalless first half against Bugbrooke at Robingoodfellowes Lane but took the lead after 56 minutes through Matthew Foy. Josh Burrows then made it 2-0 to the Hares after 66 minutes before the Badgers pulled one back through Calvin Green.
At Fountain Fresh Park, Wisbech took on Midlands Premier League outfit Tividale in the first round of the Vase. The West Midlanders had been bottom of the table when the draw was made but came into this game on the back of two wins. A poor first half for the Fenmen saw them concede after 30 minutes through a Taylor Townsend effort, but they equalised in the first minute of the second half, Amir Ward finding the bottom corner from just inside the box.
After 75 minutes a poor pass back to home keeper Dan George was intercepted by Dom Dell and Tividale took the lead again, only for sub Rob Conyard to equalise with his first touch eight minutes later to take the match to penalties.
Conyard saw Wisbech’s first spot kick saved, Tividale then scored, Sam Murphy made it 1-1 and George then saved a Tividale strike before Chris Assombalonga made it 2-1 to the Fenmen. George then saved again to put Wisbech into the driving seat, but Sisa Tuntulwana’s kick was then saved and Tividale scored again to make it 2-2 after four kicks each. Keeper George then buried Wisbech’s fifth penalty and Tividale scored to make it 3-3. Ward then saw the Fenmen’s sixth spot kick saved before Tividale scored to go through to the next round.
Parson Drove had taken 13 points from a possible 15 in October but lost their last match of the month 3-1 at Swaffham after scoring first through Tommy Hunt but then being forced to play much of the match with 10 men after a first-half red card for Callum Robinson after a reckless challenge. Matthew Hayden, Gino Livoti and Chez Rust scored for The Pedlars.
On Wednesday night, Drove twice fought back from a losing position and equalised with the last kick of the game to draw 2-2 at home to Holbeach United, assistant manager Dean Miller and striker Bradley Easy getting the goals.
