Teenagers retain Wisbech Tennis Club titles
Two school students won the singles titles at Wisbech Tennis Club's championships for the second year this weekend.
Wisbech Thomas Clarkson Academy students Sophie Tjurina (14) and Seth Briggs-Williams (15) both retained the titles they won last year.
Sophie, who started playing at the age of six, hit some terrific shots and was aways in control against Wendy Cropp, a previous six times holder of the title, and won 6-1, 6-0.
Seth, who has been playing tennis since the age of four, was playing club coach Bruno Maraschin in an eagerly anticipated match, which did not disappoint.
The first set was a thrilling, close one of 6-4 to Seth, with both players showing full control of some exceptional shots. The second set Seth won 6-2, in the best final the club has seen for many years.
The club also played the Plate Finals earlier in the day, for players knocked out in the first round of the championships. Jacqui West beat Anne Piccaver 6-1, 6-3 in the Ladies, and Jason Smith beat Andy Lister in a marathon of a match that went to a tie-break 6-3, 7-6 in the Mens.
The players were presented with their trophies by Sue Pitcher, in the beautiful sunshine in front of a socially distanced crowd of spectators.
