Three Wisbech St Mary teams gunning for promotion
Although Wisbech St Mary’s position in the Premier Division of the Cambs County League is looking precarious, the three other Saints teams could all be set for promotion.
Three wins in five days meant Wisbech St Mary Reserves are looking favourites to accompany Littleport Town up from 2B. Saints beat the league leaders 4-2 on Tuesday night, with goals from Kieran Hamilton, Aaron McKenna and subs Kai Scott-Henson and Jamal Shenille.
On Thursday, they won 5-4 at second-place AFC Mildenhall, Pawel Kalvzny getting four goals and Callum Taylor also on target. And on Saturday, they won 7-4 at home to the same opposition, Kalvzny’s hat-trick making it 35 for the season, Shenille netting two and Ajay Jolly and Hank Wright also netting. Saints are now four points from MIldenhall with four games in hand.
In the same division, struggling Manea United lost 4-0 at home to Crusaders 2019 in midweek and then drew 1-1 at home to Soham United on Saturday.
Second-place Wisbech St Mary Development A strengthened their 3B promotion challenge with a 6-2 home win against Hartford Rangers Reserves on Saturday, Callum Taylor scoring twice and Oliver Cottrill, Archie Wilksinson and subs Jack Codrington and Harvey Wood also scoring.
And Wisbech St Mary B still lead 4C after two wins. On Wednesday evening they triumphed 2-0 at Huntingdon United Reserves, Adam Key and Joe Whyborn scoring, and on Saturday they won 6-1 at Mepal and Sutton Reserves, Key’s double taking him to 38 for the season and Stuart Beckett, Whyborn and subs Ethan Goodale and James Spittlehouse also scoring.
Four points behind them but with two games in hand, AEK United won 4-2 at Chatteris Town A on Tuesday evening, Kensey Carter netting twice to make it 15 for the season, Dan Hempson reaching 30 for the campaign and Daniel Short also on target.
Wimblington’s chances of promotion from Cambs County League Senior A took a massive dent on Saturday when they lost 4-0 at home to Somersham Town, meaning they now have to win their remaining three games and hope others slip up.
Two goals from Charlie Munns were not enough in 1B as eight-place Chatteris Town Reserves went down 5-2 at fifth-place Needingworth United.
In the Peterborough League Premier Division, Leverington Sports lost 3-0 at home to Holbeach United Reserves and Chatteris Town drew 3-3 at home to Crowland Town, Sam Bond’s double taking him to 12 for the season and Jack McLoughlin also on target.
In Division One, Wisbech Town Reserves beat Whittlesey Athletic Development 3-2 in their final game of the season, Harry Ashby scoring twice for The Fenmen and Gustavs Gerlahs also on target, with Joe Scott netting twice for Athletic.
In Division Two, Leverington Sports Reserves lost 2-0 at home to Crowland Town Reserves, while on Tuesday evening in Division Three, Long Sutton Athletic Reserves were beaten 6-2 at home by South Lincolnshire Swifts, Jamal Nyang and Lewis Horne on target for The Magpies.
In Division Three North, three wins in a week have put Marshland Saints on the cusp of promotion. On Tuesday night, goals from David Abbott, Jack Cropley and Connor Harper saw them beat visiting leaders Watlington 3-1.
They were given a walkover at Easton Reserves on Saturday and then this afternoon won 5-0 at Gayton United. A point at home to AFC Lynn on Friday evening will guarantee promotion.
Saints Reserves lost 6-0 at Terrington Tigers Youth in Division One of the North West Norfolk League.
