Anglers across the Fens saddened by news of Peter's passing
Many anglers across the Fens were sad to hear the news that Peter Parlett had passed away last week.
Peter had been a member of Tydd Gote A C for many years before he started working at the Wisbech Spillers factory.
Whilst at Spillers he joined Spratts AC and was always a competitive and at times a winner on their match venues around the area. He retired five years ago and left the rivers to concentrate on commercial lakes and, of late, joined Fenland Rods AC and again was often making the frame. He proved to be a very capable angler, first on natural venues and later on carp waters in our area – an angler who will be missed for sure.
At the weekend Fenland Rods held a drawn pairs match on the Elm Pool at Decoy Lakes, always a very competitive event in the club’s calendar – but when two of the better anglers came out of the bag together it was always going to be tough going for the rest of the field and so it proved. Kev Lee won the match and his section with 139lb 6oz and was ably assisted by Tony Nisbett, who had 94lb 15oz to come second in his section, giving them a winning total of three points. Trevor Cousins and Callum Judge made a good fight of it though with four points, followed by Dave Garner and John Smith with five points.
Spratts AC fished the Yew Lake recently which saw the consistent Mick Ramm taking the honours from peg 15. Mick alternated between meat and paste close into the margins netting carp to double figures in his weight of 108lb 15oz. Trevor Cousins came a close second from peg 8. He caught on a small Method feeder with sweetcorn and sometimes pellet on the hook for 101lb 5oz, followed by John Smith with 99lb 4oz from peg 10 catching carp and barbel.
The Kingfisher Lake at Townsend Fishery was in fine form for those anglers fishing the Sunday open match, with the lake producing a close match. Top rod was Steven Hillman with 87lb 14oz from peg 13. He found fish all day on the pellet waggler. Runner-up was Geoff Arnold, who was on peg 13 and caught most of his fish on the long pole with pellet to finish with a level 78lb, then came Dave Rodwell with 65lb 5oz, catching on the pellet waggler before switching to meat on the pole fished close in.
On Saturday it was the Tackle Shop Challenge match which saw Antics from Downham Market taking the honours with a three man team weight of 181lb 6oz. Falling just short was Shipshape Tackle from King’s Lynn, just 7lb adrift of the winners.
Sunday saw the fishery holding their latest qualifier match for the grand final which will take place in September. There were some good weights taken but none better than match winner Steve Freeman’s net of carp going to the scales at 127lb 9oz. He drew peg 8 and caught really well in the margins late in the afternoon to top a strong field. Runner-up was John Bishop with 94lb 2oz, followed by Steve Roslyn with 83lb 12oz. The remaining qualifier dates are: July 14, 21, August 4, August 18.

Arnie Palmer won round two of the King of the Fens match fished on the North Level Drain on Sunday. He had seven bream caught on worm and caster. On the team front Sensas Mark One White took the team event on the day.
Results: 1st Arnie Palmer 26lb 12oz, 2nd Josh Newman 14lb 9oz, 3rd Mick Dixon 9lb 140oz, 4th Bob Bates 7lb 5oz.
