Two weekend defeats see Wisbech relegated
Wisbech Town were relegated from the East Anglian Premier League at the weekend after two defeats.
James Williams’ men lost their final league game of the season at home to Witham on Saturday, meaning they had to scrap it out on Sunday against Two Counties Championship winners Halstead.
A heavy defeat at the hand of the Essex side means Wisbech’s first time in the Premier League has ended after just one season.
At home to Witham, Wisbech elected to field and saw the visitors make 275-9 from 50 overs, Ryan Clark taking 3-36 from 10 overs, George Bruce 2-37 from six and a wicket each for Kieran Haynes, Jonny Garner, Joe Dunning and Jamie Gollands.
In reply, Wisbech were 156 all out from 33 overs, meaning they lost by 119 runs. Jamie Seabrook top scored with 39, Bruce scored 18, Ross Gardner 16, Garner 15, Gary Freear 14, wicket keeper Josh Bowers 13 and Gollands 10.
In Sunday’s play-off final, Wisbech were beaten by 179 runs. After being asked to bat, the home side made 314-5 from their 50 overs, Garner taking 3-77 from 10, Haynes 1-41 and Bruce 1-64.
In reply, Wisbech never really looked in contention as they were bowled out for 135 off 32.4 overs. Openers Freear and Gollands scored 31 and 16 respectively, Clark 13, Seabrook 17 and Thomas Hoyle 16.
