Tydd St Giles golf club honoured senior member Brian Shales for the outstanding work he has done at the club for over 20 years,

Shales joined the men’s section in 1977 spending time on the committee, then moved on to the seniors formed in 1977 when there was only about a dozen playing competition on a Tuesday. He joined the senior committee in 1998 and was appointed captain in 2002, a position held for 10 years.

During those years along with Malcolm Ross and Robin Neale they set about the task of building a strong senior section and introducing a mass of events. In 2003 they were asked by the management to set up and run a seniors open day which turned out to be the backbone for other major events that followed. The charity golf days during his 10 years raised £20,000 for The Rays of Sunshine children’s charity; also Fawnaps, Macmillan cancer research and Crohns Disease charity.

Brian was very lucky one year in persuading ex-Scottish football international, and Norwich City goalkeeper, Bryan Gunn, as a guest celebrity to support one of The Ray of Sunshine charity days,

The most popular new event in 2000 was the introduction of the Ryder Cup; while 2010 saw the Lincolnshire Annual Past Captains day which attracted 160 golfers from around the region. This was the largest number of players for a single seniors event at Tydd St Giles to date.

The last two years have seen Brian’s role change to project co-ordinator.

Brian received an hononary lifetime membership of the club and said all that had been achieved could not have been done without the great support from Neale, Dugard and Ross, not forgetting the management at Tydd St Giles.

Brian is now enjoying a quieter time with his family and enjoying playing a few rounds.
