Wisbech Walking Football Club's Yellow and Red teams enjoyed an unbeaten weekend

Wisbech’s walking football sides worked hard for a brilliant unbeaten day.

Wisbech Yellows were first up at the weekend, taking on Glinton and Northborough as Paul Verbrugge and Simon Gant made their PDFL debuts.

Mark Ormrod, Wayne Beasant, Steve Collis and Martin Beasant made up the rest of their lineup.

The game couldn’t have started better, and after five minutes Wayne Beasant let fly with a thunderbolt shot from the halfway line that flew into the top left corner and established an early lead for the Fenmen.

Glinton pressed forward, but a disciplined Wisbech defence stood firm and then doubled their lead when Verbrugge found Collis in acres of space outside the penalty area, who slipped his shot past the keeper.

A penalty was then awarded to the Fenmen for a Glinton defender entering the penalty area, and it was debutant Verbrugge who placed the one step spot-kick calmly into the bottom right hand corner to give Wisbech a 3-0 lead at half time.

That was how the game ended as Wisbech gave a good display of possession football in the second half without adding to the score line.

Game two for the Yellows was against Hampton and, buoyed by their earlier win, Wisbech went into the game full of confidence.

They started on the front foot and tested the Hampton keeper early with shots from Verbrugge and Collis, but the keeper denied both players.

Somewhat against the run of play, Hampton got a ball to their forward who managed to turn and rifle a shot into the top left corner to give them the lead. Despite upping the pressure, the Fenmen were trailing at half time.

The second half saw the Hampton keeper again pull off numerous saves to keep Hampton in the game, but it was his error that led to the equaliser when he picked the ball up outside the area and a penalty was awarded. This time it was Wayne Beasant who converted the kick to level the game at 1-1.

Try as they did Wisbech could not find a winner, and the game ended 1-1 for a good four points gained by the Yellows in their division 2 campaign.

Reigning PDFL champions Wisbech Reds went into matchday two possibly facing their hardest day of competition in the PDFL with games against Boston United Yellows and Norwich City B.

John Knight, Ben Baylis, Richard Mellor, Will Barrett, Scott Sawers and Steve Wyness were in the matchday squad.

The game against Boston didn’t start great for the Reds as Boston striker Jez Hyland pounced on a rebound off the keeper to give his side a 1-0 lead.

The Fenmen responded well and after some great interchanging play with Mellor, Sawers rifled a shot past the Boston keeper.

Wisbech were playing some great football and deservedly took the lead when Baylis slipped the ball through to Mellor, who converted his chance to give the Reds the lead at half time. Early in the second half Boston were down to four men when a sliding tackle on Sawers resulted in a two-minute sin bin for the Boston defender.

Wisbech capitalised straight away when Sawers found Wyness in space and his shot nestled in the back of the net.

Wisbech were now in control of the game and Boston could not get a touch on the ball; it was only Boston keeper Danny Tempest keeping them in the game.

Boston pulled a goal back after they managed to convert a free kick and set up an exciting end to the game, and with a minute to go Boston found the bottom of the net to equalise when Wisbech failed to close down an attacker.

With seconds to go, Wisbech had chances to win the game. Tempest was again called into action to pull off a wonder save from Wyness and then from Sawers, who looked like he had won with the last kick of the game only to have the foot of Tempest deny him and the Fenmen had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

Next up was Norwich City A, who had former Fenman Warren Clark in their ranks.

It was Clark who started the scoring off in this high quality walking football game between two top teams as he turned Barrett and rifled a left foot shot past the stranded Knight.

Sawers then found space to turn his defender and get a shot off which flashed past the City keeper to level the game at 1-1. Sawers was in top form and it was the lethal frontman again who gave Wisbech the lead 2-1 at half time.

The second half started with the ex-Fenman again proving to be a thorn in Wisbech’s side as he managed to nip in front of Barret and get a delicate touch to steer the ball past the keeper.

Baylis then found himself high up the pitch and let fly with a shot that nestled in the bottom corner to regain the lead for Wisbech. It was then Norwich’s turn to reply as they levelled the game at 3-3 with a near turn and finish by their striker.

Sawers completed his hat-trick with a fierce shot and it looked like Wisbech would secure a hard fought win, but for the second game in a row the Fenmen conceded in the last minute when a City striker wriggled free and fired home to end an eventful game at 4-4.

Manager Jonny Pearce said: “I’m very pleased with the Yellows, we have been training hard since the last game day and I saw lots of improvements today, there are still some areas we need to work on but as a new team I am pleased with their progress and the way they apply themselves.

“What can I say about the Reds? Two tough games today against two top teams, in the Boston game we could have won by five, six or seven goals if it wasn’t for their keeper.

“Whenever we play Boston Danny is always in top form and he definitely earned his team a point today. We could have avoided conceding if we closed players down earlier and it’s something we will work on in training.

“Whenever you play Norwich you know you’re in for a tough test and the lads managed to brush themselves down from conceding last minute against Boston and take the game to Norwich, it was one of the best games of walking football I have witnessed and we were paid compliments by people watching which is always nice as we are a small club compared to both our opponents today but the lads have lots of talent, fight and desire.

“It was great to see Scott Sawers back to his best today, it’s a real plus for us moving forward. Yes it’s gutting to lose a lead twice in the last minute but we are still unbeaten this season and played teams who will be up there at the end of the season.”
