Wisbech Veterans defeat Deeping to finish season unbeaten
A strong turnout of 25 players set the tone for Wisbech Vets' final fixture of the season as they welcomed the Deeping Dinosaurs to Harecroft Road.
Under glorious sunshine, both sides were keen to throw the ball around, delivering a free-flowing and entertaining contest for the gathered supporters.
Wisbech struck first, with fullback Mark Law weaving his way through the defence to touch down beneath the posts and convert his own try.
That opening score lit a spark, and the Wisbech Vets followed it up with an impressive display of handling that belied their years.
Tries soon followed from the ever-lively Skippy Parsons, the powerful Shane Vickers, and speedster Ben Chapman.
Deeping Dinosaurs refused to roll over, with their standout performer Chris Crane getting his side on the board with a well-taken try under the posts.
The second half saw Deeping continue their momentum, and once again it was Chris Crane who capitalised, grabbing his second of the day.
But Wisbech weren’t about to let their unbeaten season slip away.
Nathaniel Humphries responded in style with a brace of tries, Lucas Hardy added another, and fittingly, captain Greg Brownlow crossed the whitewash to cap off the scoring.
It was a fitting finale for Brownlow, whose leadership has steered the Wisbech Vets through another undefeated season – a testament to the squad's depth, camaraderie, and sheer love of the game.
Wisbech 1st XV will finish the season when they play Royston for the County Junior Cup in the County Cup Finals Day at Cantabs Rugby Club on April 26.
The finals will form part of the Cantabs Rugby Club's annual Beer Festival.
On Sunday, the Wisbech U18 Colts will host Saffron Walden Rugby Club in the Eastern Counties plate final.
