Wisbech tell league they do not want a return to action until January 9
Wisbech Town Football Club has told the Northern Premier League that it does not want to play again until Saturday, January 9.
The Fenmen have made a representation that the league, which stopped on October 31 before the second coronavirus lockdown, should not re-start until that date.
Some clubs are due to play this weekend – although Wisbech did not take up the opportunity to play their home game against Sutton Coldfield.
Wisbech are then meant to be away at Spalding United on Boxing Day and at home to Stamford on New Year's Day.
A statement released today reads: "WTFC have contacted the NPL regarding the proposed restarting of competitive matches.
The board of directors has discussed the current situation regarding the coronavirus crisis and its impact upon Wisbech Town FC and all those connected with it.
An email outlining the club's position has been sent to the Northern Premier League and we wait a formal response.
However, to keep supporters updated with our position, we’ve made representations that the league campaign shouldn’t restart until Saturday, January 9 at the earliest.
This has been a difficult decision to make but has been made in the interest of the club's long term financial viability and the safety of our supporters, officials, players and visitors on return to competitive league action.
There will be no further comment until we have received a reply from the NPL Management Committee.
