Wisbech Town boss Leon Mettam issues rallying call ahead of Kimberley Miners Welfare and Quorn fixtures
Wisbech Town manager Leon Mettam has issued a rallying call as his side look to bounce straight back from a heavy league defeat.
The Fenmen were given a lesson in ruthlessness by Anstey Nomads on Saturday, who racked up seven goals to inflict the Fenland side’s first defeat in four.
However, Mettam refused to criticise his players too heavily – and accepted that his young squad will be prone to the odd freak result as they learn to add a bit of bite to their game.
A third minute goal by Mo Janneh – his 10th of the season – had got the Fenmen back in the game after Corey Armeni gave Nomads a very early lead.
However, Shay Brennan netted after 22 minutes for the home side to make it 2-1 at the break.
The visitors then conceded four goals in 13 second half minutes to trail 6-1, with Luis Christopher Rose, two from hat-trick man Armeni and Jordan Annable doing the damage.
Brennan rounded up the rout with his second on 71 minutes – and to make matters worse for Wisbech, Archie Wallace was red-carded in stoppage time.
However, now looking ahead to a trip to play ninth-placed Kimberley Miners Welfare this Saturday, Mettam said: “We’ve got a good squad. We’re starting to build a really good squad.
“We’ll work on it this week in training, and it’s all about reactions.
“Today was just a bad reaction. If that was to happen again next week, then I’d be worried. It’s a case of ‘right, we’ll take it on the chin, we’ll move on, we’ll build again, we’ll not beat each other up about it’.
“We’ll put our arms around each other, we’re a team. You just keep building.
“Everyone takes a hiding once in a while. I’m not going to start digging people out – I don’t need to, they’ve been brilliant for me.”
The Fenmen now face a double-header as they look to bounce back to the kind of form that has so impressed since the start of the year.
That starts with the trip to Kimberley Miners Welfare this weekend, before Mettam’s side welcome Quorn to Fountain Fresh Park next Tuesday.
