Wembley heartbreak as Chatteris fighter Jordan Gill stopped in four rounds against Kiko Martinez
Jordan Gill's world title hopes seem a long way off tonight after he was comprehensively beaten by Kiko Martinez at the London Arena.
Chatteris fighter Gill,28, lost his EBU European Featherweight title to former world champ Martinez, 36, in four brutal rounds.
After shading a first round where he connected with twice as many punches as the veteran Spaniard, Gill shared a level second round – but for the next six minutes there was only one man in it.
The fight was also a world title eliminator and it is now Martinez who goes through to battle for a third world crown against current champ Josh Warrington.
Gill was down twice in round three to Martinez uppercuts and the 60 second break was not enough as another right and a left hook saw him hit the canvas twice more in the fourth.
To his credit, Gill sprang back to his feet on each occasion, but trainer Dave Coldwell threw in the towel after that last punch and referee Giuseppe Quartarone stopped the fight, with blood streaming down Gill's face.
