March Town boss gutted to see big FA Vase clash against Daventry Town fall foul of the cold snap

March Town's big FA Vase clash against Daventry Town was called off just an hour before kick-off as the cold snap continues to play havoc with the weekend’s sporting fixtures.

Following a pitch inspection by match referee Thomas Kelly at the GER, the Hares announced on social media shortly before 2pm that areas of the pitch had been deemed “unplayable”.

Both sets of players and many fans had already arrived at the ground, and the late postponement came as a bitter disappointment after club officials had worked around the clock all week to try to get the tie on.

The Fourth Round clash will now take place next Saturday (January 18).

Hares boss Ash Taylor said: "We're gutted, but the referee has made a decision. If it were me, I would have left it until quarter-to-three and then decided as the sun was still on the pitch.

"Compared to this morning to how it is now it has improved massively and we are going to train on it. We feel it was alright but the referee has made his decision and we have to respect that.

"The amount of people down here trying to get this game on shows what a great club this is. So many people did all they could to get it on and we've just fallen short.

"We covered up the areas that we knew would be most affected and that helped and we've had heaters in the goalmouth to try to make sure they were okay.

"So much work has taken place and we wanted to take that risk this morning as we felt it would still be playable. If you play on a summer's day and it is a hot day and the ground is rock solid in my eyes it's kind of similar.

"I kind of get it where at 4 o'clock they are kind of saying it could get frozen over. It is what it is, it is frustrating but we'll do a session today to keep us ticking over, train in the week and then be ready for next Saturday."

Some fans were already in the ground and the club says all tickets and golden goal tickets that have been bought will be valid for next Saturday.

The games involving Parson Drove, Whittlesey Athletic and Wisbech Town have all been called off because of frozen pitches.
