Wisbech Inline Speed Skaters are celebrating the end of an incredibly successful year with the launch of their new website.

The West Norfolk based club was originally founded in 1978 by a group of roller skaters, speed skaters and figure skaters who shared a passion for eight wheels.

Within a year the 60-strong club membership found themselves competitive and were racing regularly in the UK and at European and World level representing Great Britain all over the globe.

Over the years the club has won countless awards, been featured on TV and earned a total of 232 British Championship titles. Club coach and veteran member, Mike McInerney, holds the record for the most number of British titles for the club with 47.

In 2018 the club gained nine British champions and earned 30 British titles between them. The team brought home a whopping 71 gold, silver and bronze medals in the Indoor/Outdoor British championships in total. Over the last couple of years they have travelled to Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Portugal to take part in the European race events, gaining much-needed experience.

Highlights of this year include youngster Arthur Buckler winning back to back races in the prestigious Flanders Grand Prix in Belgium two years on the trot, making him the first British Skater to achieve this in many years. He also retained his Mini Boys British Championship title for 2018.

Twin sisters Lucy and Eve McInerney smashed the Senior Ladies indoor relay record by a huge 30 seconds to become Relay British champions for the second year running. Mike McInerney and Flynn McGurk took an epic win the Senior Mens indoor relay event after a hard-fought battle with rivals from Essex which saw them become Relay British Champions and also earned them an award for the Best Performance of 2018.

Racing starts again in January and during the year the team are hoping for a much-needed outdoor track to help improve their outdoor skating skills, which is now at the fund-raising stage. They also plan to host their own home race in February, attend the European Masters Marathon event in London, travel abroad to gain more experience on the European race tracks, as well as earn those all-important British titles and break records and personal best times in the process.

They welcome new members and the team has a healthy membership of all ages and abilities, come and see for yourself at Skaters Roller Rink in Walpole Highway on Saturday from 5pm.
