Williamson nets brace to keep Wisbech top
Lindum Ladies 1
Wisbech Ladies 1sts 4
Wisbech travelled to Lindum in a battle to remain top of the table on Saturday.
Quick on the counter, Wisbech won a short corner early on which was turned in by Katie Rodger.
Their second came just minutes after when Jane Peggs neatly deflected in another attacking penalty corner.
Wisbech kept the momentum up and quick movement of the ball from Rodger to Sophie Culshaw and into Lisa Williamson who rocketed the ball into the net with a fantastic reverse strike. Winning another penalty corner, Williamson tapped in at the far post and Wisbech went into half time 4-0 up.
Lindum pulled a goal back with a nicely worked short corner. The ladies remain top of 1N with another fantastic win and excellent team performance.
They take on Letchworth next weekend at home, 1pm push back.
Wisbech Ladies 2nds 2 Cambs Nomads Ladies 1
Wisbech climbed out of the relegation zone after they beat Nomads, who were comfortably in mid-table.
Crucially the hosts had the better of the opening stages and they took advantage with well-taken goals, both from short corners.
Firstly, Jodi Peggs was played in at the top of the circle and slammed the ball home for her first goal of the season. The second came with a well-worked routine when Peggs hit the ball into the circle and Gilly Dunn scored with a deflected effort.
The defence remained well organised, marshalled by Lorraine Parker, plus a goalline clearance from captain Ali Mason. Lou Sandall and Steph Hanlon had good games in midfield, along with the commanding PoM Sue Robinson.
Next week the team are away to bottom-placed Lindum 2nd’s and then the final game the week after is at home against league leaders St Ives.
Wisbech Ladies 3rds 4 Long Sutton Ladies 2nds 0
Wisbech beat Long Sutton in their final game of the season.
Possession was shared equally in the first half. Wisbech had much enthusiasm and great runs across the wings from Emma Boler and Kate Stevenson proved successful, although no goals were scored. However, following stronger play from the midfielders, Wisbech were awarded a penalty flick, which was superbly taken by Shelley Coleman.
In the second half many short corners were given, although phenomenal goal keeping from Sutton prevented any further goals. Soon after a change in the short corner tactics led to Holly Stevenson scoring. Though Long Sutton made many breaks a strong defence from Wisbech held them off, with some excellent saves from keeper Ruby Shepherd.
More short corners resulted in a faultless goal from Coleman which was then followed by another of her goals in the last five minutes.
Player of the match: Holly Stevenson.
Cambs Uni Men’s 2nds 6 Wisbech Men 2
A Wisbech side short of numbers travelled to a youthful, well-drilled University side.
Cambs Uni had most of the possession and despite a couple of Wisbech chances took the lead. Cambs added two more goals before the break.
A sprightly start to the second half saw Wisbech score through Tom Jupp. Cambs Uni replied straightaway to make it 4-1, then followed up with a fifth goal soon after. Wisbech had more possession and another short corner saw Will Denny win a flick, which he converted well. Cambs Uni scored again late on.
Wisbech are home to Felixstowe Men’s 1sts, 2:30 push back.
Wisbech Men’s 2nds 2 Cambs City Men’s Vets 1
Wisbech Men’s 2nds started strongly against a Vets team who were two places above them in the league. There were chances at both ends, but the half-time score was 0-0.
Dom Stannard broke the deadlock. A defensive lapse allowed the visitors to equalise but Jamie Gollands secured the win with his first goal for the 2nd team.
Wisbech are away to Bourne Deeping Men’s 2nds 11am.
Other scores: Wisbech Men’s 3rds 3 St Ives Men’s 3rds 6. Wisbech are home to Cambs City Men’s 5ths 4pm.
Wisbech Men’s 4ths 1
St Neots Men’s 2nds 15.
The 4ths faced top of the league St Neots.
MoM Will Smithee made his debut in goal and if it wasn’t for some of his excellent saves the scoreline would have been a lot worse.
St Neots have only conceded 10 goals this season so Wisbech were delighted to score via Jamie Gollands. Wisbech are away to Bourne Deeping Men’s 4ths 12:30.
