Wisbech Town Hockey Club's Mens 1st XI were one of several teams to triumph at the weekend

Wisbech Town Hockey Club Mens 1st XI got back to winning ways with a 4-3 triumph over Bury St. Edmunds in East Men’s Division 1 North.

Jamie Hallatt, Fred Whatling, Sam Markillie, and Ben Tarratt were all on target at the weekend in what coach Charlie Baxter called a ‘phenomenal team performance’.

“Every single player played at a high intensity and fast pace the entire match,” Baxter said. “Everybody understood their role, and I was delighted with how everybody performed. Fred and Jamie were both outstanding up front, and there were excellent performances from Ben Tarratt and Jason Esser also.”

The result sees Wisbech 7th in the table after six games, with three wins and three losses. This weekend, they host King’s Lynn-based Pelicans HC (1:45PM).

The Ladies 1st XI picked up a hard earned point against Watton in their Women’s Division 1 North clash at Harecroft Road. The visitors took the lead midway through the first half when two Watton players managed to beat goalkeeper Emily Thomas to open the scoring, but a brilliant solo run and finish from Player of the Game Jemima Mitchell got Wisbech back on level terms before the break.

Watton reclaimed the lead early in the second half, only for Wisbech to hit back through Laura Overland after her deflected shot found the back of the net. The visitors again went ahead, but Wisbech equalised late in the game when Sam Pritchard slotted home following a goalmouth scramble.

The first team travels to Sheringham this weekend, where they will face last placed North Norfolk HC.

Wisbech Men's 2nd team moved into first place in Division 3 North West thanks to a 7-1 win away at Bourne-Deepings 2nd XI. Goals from Dan Martell and Scott Welcher gave them an early lead, before Josh Porter added a third.

Bourne Deeping pulled a goal back from a short corner, but Tom Peggs restored Wisbech’s three-goal cushion before half time. Porter added his second of the game to make it 5-1, before Martell converted a penalty flick; Ported then completed his hat-trick to round out an emphatic victory for the Fenland side.

The Ladies 2nd XI ended their recent cold streak with a 4-2 win away at Peterborough. Goals from Emma Baker, Oliwia Bolka, Lilian Ley, and Rebecca Strudwick helped Wisbech pick up the victory, while Ana Norman was selected as Player of the Game after a strong performance.

This weekend, the ladies welcome 3rd placed Spalding 2nd XI to Harecroft Road (3:30PM).

Superior finishing proved to be the difference as the Men's 3rd XI were beaten 3-0 by Cambridge City 6th XI. The visitors took the lead early in the first half, before adding a second and third goal during the second half of the game. George Gowler went closest for Wisbech midway through the second half, but the home side were ultimately left to rue their missed chances.

The Mens 4th XI were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Peterborough’s 8th XI, with Jon Boyall on target for Wisbech. This weekend the team travels to Kettering to face the Northamptonshire side’s 5th team.

The Ladies 3rd XI looked to stay match sharp with a friendly game away at Long Sutton, where goals from captain Andrea Eggleton And Ruby Warren helped Wisbech secure a 2-1 win.
