Wisbech 2nds win derby clash against Long Sutton 2nds in what could be a season-defining win
Wisbech 2nds produced their best display of the season in what could be a season-defining win against rivals Long Sutton 2nds.
Captain Jonathan “Monty” Shippey masterminded a change of formation which saw Wisbech come out of the blocks fast, keeping the opposition at bay and putting pressure on the Sutton D.
After a goalless first half, where Long Sutton hit the Wisbech crossbar, Kieran Hallett executed a textbook drag flick to put the home side up from a short corner.
Shortly afterwards, Drew Harvey picked the ball up in midfield and made a sublime solo run, slotting the ball past the Long Sutton goalkeeper before Jason Mallett, who had been causing havoc in the opposition half all game, sealed the deal late on.
The men's 1sts bounced back from two straight defeats with a 4-1 win against a well-drilled Cambs City 3s side.
They took the lead thanks to Lewis Jackson who went on a mazy run before following up his first shot to lift into the roof of the net. Tom Jupp shortly made it two with a powerful finish from the top of the circle.
Jupp added his second before Fred Whatling scored a fourth before a late Cambridge consolation.
The next assignment is a trip to Nottingham for a last-16 cup fixture against West Bridgford.
The men's 3s hosted the return fixture against Cambridge Uni having snatched a narrow victory in the away fixture.
Wisbech goalkeeper Rob McGregor made some superb saves during a 4-1 defeat.
Some superb interplay between Jordan Bown and John Lawrence led to a rare scoring opportunity which was seized by Jon Boyall.
Wisbech Ladies 2nds faced a tough ask at St Ives and so it proved as the home side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
The player-of-the-match for Wisbech was Tina Forder who pulled off some excellent saves.
The ladies 3rds remain unbeaten this season after Molly Evans and Izzy Herring were on target in a 2-1 victory against St Neots in a development game.
