Sensas Mark One fish tough team match at Evesham
The Wisbech based Sensas Mark One anglers left the local match scene at the weekend to fish a team match on the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham.
It’s a hard water to fish and they came up against some very strong local teams as well as clubs from all over the country, writes Ken Wade.
They took the runner-up spot and earned a place in the grand final at the Evesham river festival weekend at the end of August. The Sensas team comprised Jonny Bates, Sam Merry, Ray Malle, Pete Wills and John Price.
The hot weather has affected form as the Spratts AC anglers found out in their latest match. The Beastie Lake at Decoy had been in fine form but the lads from Wisbech caught it on an off day, although match winner Trevor Cousins did put a very respectable 84lb 10oz to the scales. He drew peg 30 and caught on the Method feeder with pellet before switching to the margins late in the match to catch carp to 8lb. John Garner came in second from peg 23. He fished meat, corn and pellet close in for 63lb 3oz, and then came Peter Spriggs with 54lb 1oz. Peter fished his usual pellet and paste approach on a short pole line and the margins on peg 29, catching carp and barbel.
After a Friday evening of glorious rain The Magpie Pool at Rookery Waters looked in great shape and produced some stunning weights for those fishing the Saturday Summer Qualifier match. In fact the match result will probably go down as one of the very best ever recorded at the fishery. Top rod with a massive 337lb 13oz was Josh Pace on peg 33. He caught on the pole fishing shallow with casters. Runner-up Tim Bates fished similar tactics to the winner on peg 27, putting 328lb 4oz to the scales, followed by Simon Godfrey on 302lb 1oz.
The Thursday Summer Qualifier fished on the Jay Lake at Rookery saw John Young take the honours with 150lb 4oz from peg 33 fishing the long pole with pellet. Second place went to David Millburn on peg 45. He finished with 96lb 14oz and Graham Welton on peg 41 was third with 92lb 6oz.
There was a big turn out for the regular Wednesday Over 60’s Open on the Raven Lake and with all pegs used for this match, it was going to be a close affair. Out in front was Kev Gammon on peg 21, he fished soft pellet for 140lb 4oz. Second place went to Vic German on peg 5 taking 90lb 8oz, with Dennis Ward taking third with 81lb from peg 22.
