Is the great escape on for Wisbech Town?
Wisbech ended a run of 14 consecutive defeats in stunning style on Saturday, with an emphatic 5-1 win at relegation rivals Histon Town.
The Fenmen arrived at Bridge Road bottom of the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midland Division, knowing only a win at the third-from-bottom Stutes would keep their survival hopes alive.
The win means they are now just three points from the relegation play-off spot currently occupied by Histon, with three games remaining.
Danny Draper gave Wisbech a 16th minute lead at Histon, and then top scorer Sam Bennett bagged a 21 minute hat-trick to put him on 10 Fenmen goals for the season before Sam Murphy made it 5-0 at the break with an absolute screamer.
Histon pulled a goal back in the 51st minute and saw a penalty saved by Fenmen stopper Luke Pearson.
Wisbech have tough home games against title chasing pair Chasetown and Ilkeston Town over the next two Saturdays, but have a winnable game at bottom side Soham Town Rangers on Bank Holiday Monday, April 18.
Histon's final three games are at 16th placed Sutton Coldfield Town next Saturday, at home to ninth placed Cambridge City on Bank Holiday Monday and at eighth placed Sporting Khalsa on April 23.
Soham are at 13th placed Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday and, after the Wisbech game, travel to 11th placed Bedworth United on the last day of the season.
Wisbech St Mary have finished the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League First Division North season without a win after drawing their final game, 0-0 at home to Peterborough North End. Parson Drove were beaten 4-0 at home to leaders Harleston Town. March Town were without a game.
