Wisbech overcome difficult conditions in Storm Darragh to win at Wymondham
With Storm Darragh making conditions as challenging as it could, Wisbech made it back-to-back league wins with a 19-0 success at Wymondham.
Centre Sam Anderson with a half break and great timed offload on the Wymondham 22 released Ari Baghdouyan in the gap to sprint over for the try.
The extras were added to give Wisbech a 7-0 lead at the break.
Wymondham started the second half hungry for victory and their intensity tested the Men in Reds’ defence.
Wisbech soaked up the pressure, wind and rain as they started to build their own pressure with powerful phases and patience on the ball.
Hal Whyatt's determined chase and pace carried him over the whitewash to make it 12-0.
A powerful carry from skipper Kerrie McMullen broke the defensive line and got in behind the Wymondham defence.
Number 8 MJ Wright was quick to exploit the gap, going in under the posts barely untouched on the stroke of full-time and the conversion was added.
Ari Baghdouyan was named the Bowsers Man of the match for his 80-minute impressive tireless defence.
Veenendaal said afterwards "The conditions kept it a low-scoring, scrappy game.
"At times we made some poor tactical decisions on the field which could have cost us but I'm pleased with the overall performance, keeping the intensity and defence for the full 80 minutes in the cold and wet."
“But we certainly did not have it all our own way, going into the break with only seven points scored is a credit to Wymondham, a well-drilled and coached side that tested and stretched us all the way.
"There were several outstanding individual performances but the collective effort, especially in defence led by young flanker Ari Baghdouyan who produced an exceptional tackle count without once falling foul of the referee was the ultimate difference, and I am a firm believer in defence wins games.
"We know there are harder tests to come and plenty to improve on but the boys are working hard in training and I can ask for no more than that
"We are meant to be back in action on Saturday at home hosting Crusaders but they as a club are going through some troubles which could prevent them from fielding a team.
"With the long history between our two clubs, we are 100 per cent rooting for them and wish them all the best."
