Wisbech bottom for the first time




Wisbech occupy the bottom relegation spot in the East Anglian Premier League for the first time this season after an agonisingly close home defeat to Copdock & Old Ipswichian on Saturday.

They are five points from eleventh-place Horsford after a one-wicket home defeat to the fourth-place Suffolk team.

After being asked to bat, Wisbech were 211 all out from 42.5 overs, wicketkeeper Josh Bowers hitting nine fours in his 59 runs from 60 balls. He was supported by opener Ryan Clark 27, captain James Williams 22, Jonny Garner 19 and Ross Gardner 23.

With the visitors in bat, the match was always close and, at 180-7 the scales perhaps tipped in the home side's favour, but Copdock got the winning runs with a wicket to spare. Pick of the bowlers was Clark with 3-30 from eight, with Josh Porter 2-28 from 10 and a wicket each for George Gowler, Kieran Haynes, Garner and Gary Freear.

In the Cambs & Hunts Premier League Whitings Division One, March lost by six wickets at home to leaders Cambridge St Giles.

After electing to bat, March scored 220-9 from 50 overs, opener Andrew Mills scoring 44, Will Steventon 10, Sam Robinson 26, wicketkeeper Benjamin Pyle 19, captain Samuel Clarke 17, Shae Pooley 12 and Lewis Welcher a quickfire 38 not out from 36 balls, including five fours and a six.

In reply, St Giles reached 221-4 in 40.2 overs, Mills taking 2-24 from four overs and Callum Young and Pooley taking a wicket each.

In the CCA Senior League Division One, bottom side Chatteris beat visiting Bluntisham by 40 runs. After deciding to bat, the home team recorded 184-8 from 45 overs and then bowled out their opponents for 144 in 37 overs. Chatteris are now just eight points from safety with three fixtures remaining.

In the same division, Wisbech 2nd’s game at Royston was abandoned. After electing to bat, the visitors scored 177-9 from 45 overs, and the home team were 80-1 from 20.5 overs when the game was called off.

March 2nd lost by 15 runs at Cambourne 2nd in Division Two. The visitors put the home team into bat and they scored 164-9 from their 45 overs, Geoffrey Kirby taking 3-33, Harry Lefevre 2-13, Kian Pooley 2-30 and Mark Deas 1-11.

In reply, March registered 149 all out from 40.2 overs, James Hilliard hitting 55, Rob Sidgwick 19, John Gilson 14, and Kian Pooley 13. The results leaves March 23 points from safety with three games left.

Chatteris 2nd lost by 96 runs at leaders Cherry Hinton in Division Three North. The home side decided to bat and were 143 all out from 30.4 overs, Oliver Tilbrook taking an impressive 4-22 from eight overs, Liam Boxall 3-17 off 3.4, Jago Pearson 2-37 from eight and Stuart Porter 1-39 from seven.

The visitors never got their reply going and were all out for 47 from 13.2 overs, Gianashan Sathees the only player to reach double figures with his unbeaten 17.

Wisbech 3rd were beaten by 35 runs at home to Telugu Association of Cambridge in the same division. The visitors scored 170-9 from 40 overs after electing to bat, Tom Freear taking 4-20 from eight overs, Colin Freear 2-42 from eight and a wicket apiece for Amber Crossley-King and Louis Avis.

In reply, the home team were 135 all out from 37.4 overs, opener Nick Osbourne scoring 22, captain Colin Freear 12 and Amrish Bhatt 35 from 37 balls, with six fours and a six. Wisbech are now just five points from safety and have two games to play, while some of their relegation rivals have three matches left.

Wisbech 4th were also defeated, losing by six wickets at Chippenham 2nd in Junior League Four North. Batting first, the visitors were 181 all out from 36.2 overs, opener Robert Harris scoring 63 and captain Martin Woollard 73, the pair putting on 140 for the second wicket. Paul Jeffery scored 17 but the rest of the order failed to reach double figures.

The home side then rushed to 182-4 from 25.5 overs, with a wicket each for Leo Hoenderkamp, Richard Cable and Jay Modhvadia. The defeat means Wisbech 4th are relegated with a game to play.

In the same division, Wimblington lost by two wickets at City of Ely 3rd. After being asked to bat, the visitors scored 136-8 from 40 overs, before the home side made 139-8 from 30.2 overs.
