Wisbech bottom of the table after defeat




Wisbech were well beaten in their East Anglian Premier League game at home to Norwich outfit Swardeston on Saturday.

After electing to bat, newly-promoted Wisbech lost opener Gary Freear early on for six but then saw a partnership of 77 between fellow opener Danny Haynes (43) and wicket keeper Josh Bowers (51) take them to 100-2.

Ryan Clark also scored 21 and Jamie Seabrook 12, but the home side capitulated from 139-2 to 172 all out from 51.1 overs as the final six batsmen scored just 12 runs between them. In reply, the Norfolk side reached 173-5 from 30.1 overs, Kieran Haynes taking 3-53 from 11 overs and George Bruce 1-27.

Wisbech knew this new level of cricket would be tough and they now sit bottom of the table after seven games, with a trip to second placed Sawston & Brabaham on Saturday.

There was also defeat for March, beaten by 65 runs at home against Foxton Granta in the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Premier League Whiting Division One Red Ball. After winning the toss and deciding to bat, the visitors put on a challenging 326-6 from 54 overs, opener Adam Webster smashing 20 fours and three sixes in his 162 from 162 balls before being caught by Lewis Welcher off the bowling of Samuel Clarke (1-74). Callum Young took 2-28, Sam Robinson 2-63 and Scott Welcher 1-47.

In reply, March put on 48 for the first wicket before Sam Robinson went for 17. At 58-3 they appeared to be struggling but then other opener Will Steventon (92, including 13 fours) and Brandon Phillips (79, with eight fours and two sixes) took the score to 205-4.

Benjamin Pyle weighed in with 29 but the run rate was not good enough and the home side ended the day on 261-8 from their 56 overs.

Wisbech 2nds were victorious in the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Premier League CCA Senior League Division One, winning by six wickets at Horseheath, who scored 181-9 from 45 overs after electing to bat. In reply, the visitors reached 186-4 from 30.5 overs.

In the same division, Chatteris lost at home to City of Ely by seven wickets. After opting to bat, the home side were skittled out for 61 from 21 overs, and Ely knocked off the runs required in just 13 overs, registering 62-3, leaving Chatteris bottom of the table.

March 2nd lost by five wickets at Thiplow in Division Two. After winning the toss and electing to bat, March were 135 all out from 39.3 overs, opener and captain James Hilliard making 44, Robert Tombs 29 and Ed Albutt 24. The home side scored 139-5 from 31 overs to take the spoils. The result leaves March bottom of the table after five games.

High-scoring Wisbech 3rd won by a massive 191 runs at Wilburton 2nd in Division Three North. After being asked to bat, openers Robert Williams and wicket keeper George Purell put on 90 for the first wicket before Purell was bowled after hitting 47 from just 35 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

Wicket keeper Tom Buck then supported Williams, hitting five fours and a six in his 33 from 29 balls, taking the score to 176-2. Leo Hoenderkamp scored 15 and when Williams finally went for 107, the score was 254-4. Williams faced 118 balls and hit 19 fours and a six. Mark Buttriss (27) and Ryan Van Waterschoot (23 not out) added to the score as Wisbech ended on an impressive 300-5 off 40 overs.

The home side had no real reply to that massive score and lost wickets at regular intervals as they were skittled out for 109 from 30 overs. Henry Plume took 3-25 off 8, Van Waterschoot 2-10, Amber Crossley-King 2-23 and Hoenderkamp 2-25.

Chatteris 2nd were defeated by 58 runs at Burwell & Exning 2nd in the same division. Things were looking hopeful for the visitors when they bowled out the home side for 158 from 32.2 overs, but they then fell to 100 all out from 32.1 overs.

Wimblington enjoyed a dramatic last over victory at Longstanton Grasshoppers 2nd in Division Four North, to go up to second in the early season table. The home side were asked to bat and were looking good after reaching 247-3 from their 40 overs. However, the visitors managed 248-9 from 39.5 overs, winning with one wicket and one ball remaining.

In the same division, our photographer was there to see Wisbech 4th lost by nine wickets at home to City of Ely 3rd. Wisbech elected to bat and registered 232-9 from 40 overs. The visitors reached their target in 27.5 overs, scoring 234-1.
