Wisbech Colts do themselves proud in derby defeat to West Norfolk

Wisbech U18 Colts side had their first taste of Friday night under the lights rugby away to West Norfolk RUFC at Gatehouse Lane.

Wisbech, pictured on the right, fielded a young Colts side, the overwhelming majority being U17s, and they never looked out of their depth against the older more experienced U18 home side who went to register a well-deserved 34-10 win.

The team showed glimpses of great potential and were far from disgraced against their Norfolk hosts.

Wisbech junior chair Marcus Hall praised the team, saying: "It was a physically tough match, as you would expect from any Wisbech v West Norfolk contest.

"The scoreline did not reflect how competitive the match was.

"The lads learnt a lot and there were plenty of positives for this young side to take away and build on.

"Thank you to West Norfolk Rugby Club for their hospitality and for making the match possible."

Wisbech's first team look forward to welcoming old rivals and promotion-chasing Ipswich YM Rugby Club to Harecroft Road on Saturday.

The second-place Suffolk side is pushing West Norfolk hard to the league title and the Men in Red could do their near-neighbours a huge favour with a positive result in front of their home faithful.

The Wildcats were scheduled to host Spalding 2nds on the same day, but unfortunately Spalding are unable to field a team.
