Wisbech Town CC 3rd XI fall to Telugu Association of Cambridge while first team lose for first time this season




Wisbech Town CC 3rd XI crashed at home to Telugu Association of Cambridge by ten wickets in the Cambs & Hunts CCA Junior League 2 North on Saturday.

Wisbech closed on 166-9 from their 40 overs in what was the Citizen’s game of the day.

Opening bat Nick Osbourne hit 22, George Purell 13, Finlay Murdoch 22, Lee Hoenderkamp 12 and Elliott Peck not out 17.

But promotion-chasers Telugu smashed 169 for no loss in a mere 19.2 overs to keep Wisbech rooted to the foot of the table.

League leaders Wisbech Town 1sts suffered their first defeat of the season by three wickets at nearest rivals Foxton Granta.

Wisbech were dismissed for 122 from 44.4 overs.

Danny Haynes was run out for 56 from 98 balls, fellow opener Gary Freear hit 24 and number four Sam Albutt 18 - but below that there were precious few runs as Wisbech collapsed from 90-2.

Granta replied with 123-7 in 28.2 overs. The visitors made a game of it after Granta seemed to be cruising on 84-1.

Josh Porter took 1-33, Freear 7.2-0-22-4 and Joe Dunning 2-7. Josh Bowers gave a wicketkeeping masterclass with two stumpings, two catches and no byes.

Wisbech are still 44 points ahead of second-placed Granta - who do have a game in hand - in Whiting & Partners Division 1.

Elsewhere, Wisbech 2nds beat Bharat Sports by 121 runs in Division 3.

Wisbech totalled 228-3 in 45 overs.

Basement team Bharat Sports fell to 107 all out in the 25th over and trail Wisbech by 44 points.

Wisbech 4ths triumphed at second-placed Sutton 2nds by 116 runs in CCA Junior League 5 North.

Wisbech set 213-7 in 40 overs. Openers Adrian Clare and Matt Esser, the wicketkeeper, both struck 52 with six boundaries apiece, while skipper Gavin Plume added 13, Seb Bell 20, Joe Brownlow 29, and Tom Freear not out 25.

Jesse Bate returned superb figures of 7.3-0-22-6 as well as taking a catch, so Sutton slumped to 97 all out in the 24th over. Chipping-in were Tom Freear 2-19 and Godfrey 2-11.

This means Wisbech are just a point behind Sutton.

March Town crashed at Ramsey by 123 runs in Whitings Division 1.

Home ‘keeper Tom Morrison cracked 122 as Ramsey piled up 346-6 in 50 overs with two century stands as the away attack toiled.

Overseas player Aaron Visser bagged 1-47, Shae Pooley 1-53 and Curtis Oldroyd 4-36.

March Town reached 223 from 40 overs. Opener Shaz Ahktar was stumped for a brisk 35, Visser top-scored with 59 off 63 balls with seven fours, captain Brandon Phillips 35 with three sixes, Oldroyd 41 off the same number of balls with seven fours and Pooley an unbeaten 15.

Meanwhile, Horseheath defeated away side March 2nds by 24 runs in CCA Senior League Division 1.

Horseheath were dismissed for 164 with 42 overs complete. Mark Deas captured 2-23, Kian Pooley 1-13, Jacob Gray 1-22 and Joseph Taylor Clark 8-1-37-5.

March were 140 all out in 40 overs and are in the relegation zone. Keeper Rob Moden scored 18, Jacob Gray 25, Alex Oldham 24, captain Lewis Welcher 34 and Taylor Clark 19.

Chatteris are fifth in CCA Senior League Division 1 after losing at Longstanton Grasshoppers by 19 runs.

Grasshoppers set 216-7 when 45 overs closed. Matthew Hollis grabbed 2-31, Oliver Tilbrook 1-54, Max Kelly1-46 and Harry Matthews 1-21.

Chatteris replied on 197-9. Their first four failed, but Matthews 57 and skipper Kelly not out 58 came to the rescue.

Matthew Hollis added 10 and number 11 Oliver Tilbrook not out 32 in a last wicket stand of 68.

A quick CCA Junior League 4 North game saw fifth-place Wimblington crash at Telugu Association of Cambridge 2nds by 10 wickets.

Wimblington were skittled for 50 in the 20th over. Opener and wicketkeeper Marcus Larham (10) was the only one to make double figures.

Second-spot Telugu raced to 51 without loss in just 8.3 overs.
