Wisbech defeated at home by relegation rivals Sudbury
Wisbech missed a chance to boost their East Anglian Premier League survival hopes when they lost at home to relegation rivals Sudbury on Saturday.
The visitors leapfrog Wisbech, who drop down to 11th in the 12-team league after a 55 run defeat.
After being asked to bat, the Suffolk side posted 227-9 from 61 overs, George Bruce taking 3-39 from nine overs, Ryan Clark 2-49, Gary Freear 2-51, George Gowler 1-38 and Josh Porter 1-49.
After some rain, Wisbech were set a revised target of 228 from 40 overs, but lost openers Danny Haynes and Gary Freear cheaply and soon found themselves at 18-3.
Captain James Williams gave his side a fighting chance, hitting eight fours in his 58 from 71 balls, and he received support from wicket keeper Josh Bowers (18) and Jamie Seabrook 37.
But when Williams was out with the score at 128-6 things looked bleak for the home team and a battling 32 not out from Jamie Gollands was in vain as the tale was swept up quickly and Wisbech ended at 172 all out from 45.4 overs.
March Town have now lost seven matches from seven and are bottom of the Cambs & Hunts Premier League Whitings League Division One after going down to a 184 run defeat at Newmarket.
After electing to bat, Newmarket raced to 277-8 declared from 54.4 overs, Phoenix Nightingale the pick of the bowlers with 3-36 from 12 overs. Samuel Clarke, Robert Tombs, Will Steventon and Scott Welcher took a wicket apiece.
In reply, March never really got going and were bowled out for 93 from 30.2 overs, captain Clarke top scoring with 21, Stuart Mills hitting 18, Sam Robinson 17 and Tombs 12.
In the CCA Senior League Division One, Wisbech 2nd won the local derby at Chatteris by four wickets. After being put into bat, the home side scored 147 all out from 35 overs. In reply, the visitors reached 148-6 from 35 overs. The result leaves Wisbech fourth and Chatteris bottom of the ten-team division.
In Division Two, March 2nd slip into the relegation area after losing by seven wickets at home to Thriplow. After being asked to bat, March made 172-9 from their 45 overs, Danny Emmington top scoring with 47 from 60 balls. Openers Karl Anderson and Geoffrey Kirby scored 20 and 22 respectively, Alun Bradshaw 19 and Nigel Wright 12.
In reply, the visitors raced to 174-3 from just 20.5 overs, Kian Pooley, Mark Deas and Emmington taking the wickets.
In Junior League Three North, Chatteris 2nd are fifth after going down to a 170 run defeat at Hemmingford Park, who were asked to bat and posted an impressive 267-4 from their 40 overs. Oliver Tilbrook took 2-22 from seven overs, Adam Elliott 1-40 and George Kupendran 1-52.
In reply, Chatteris were skittled out for 97 from 21.5 overs, Jack Whiting top scoring with 28, Elliott hitting 25, and opener Oli Bailey 11.
Wisbech 3rd are in fourth place after being beaten by 207 runs at Over & Willingham in the same division. After electing to bat, the home side scored 288-6 from 40 overs, Elliott Peck the pick of the bowlers with 2-47 from six, Mark Buttriss 2-67, Louis Avis 1-31 and John Mallett 1-57.
In reply, Wisbech were bowled out for 81 off 24.1 overs, Buttriss top scoring with 17, Dhavira Bhatt scoring 14, wicket keeper James Harper 13 and Peck 11.
Wimblington get the 20 points in Division Four North and distance themselves from the relegation area after visitors Longstanton 2nd conceded the game. In the same division, Wisbech 4th lost by 213 runs at home to Burwell & Exning 3rd, leaving them bottom of the table and without a win so far this season.
After electing to bat, Burwell scored 298-4 declared from just 30 overs, Mckenzie Mills taking 2-32, and Joe Pennells and Chris Middleton the other wickets. In reply, Wisbech were 85 all out from 25 overs, only Richard Cable (24), Mills (13) and Middleton (10) making double figures.
