Wisbech's Joshua Porter on score sheet at round robin tournament at Bedford Hockey Club
The Wisbech Grammar School U18 Boys 1st X1 hockey team won their Regional Round 2 Tournament at Bedford.
This means that they now compete at the finals in a bid to become East Regional Champions on March 7 at UEA Sports Park, Norwich.
They played in a round robin tournament at Bedford Hockey Club after qualifying from the Cambs rounds in January. The first game was against Coopers Coborn from Essex.
WGS dominated and went into half time 4–0 up, with Matthew Goodley scoring his hat-trick and Joshua Porter (Wisbech) also on the score sheet.
Samuel Phillips (King’s Lynn) and Goodley scored further goals in the second half.
Their second game was against a well-organised Stamford team. WGS kept up the same dominance with Phillips scoring first and Goodley scoring from a well-executed penalty corner (PC) routine.
Final score 2–0.
The third game was a much closer affair with the Royal Hospital School and it was a 2-1 win to WGS.
The fourth and final game was against Haileybury who had also won all their previous games. WGS had to be organised to break down the attacking play that Haileybury applied. It wasn’t long, though, before WGS took the lead from a great strike by Phillips.
James Kerry (K. Lynn) make an impressive stick save to keep WGS ahead. Samuel Landles (K. Lynn) completed the scoreline with another well-struck PC.
Final score 2–0.
