Wisbech Rugby Club beat Cambridge III to round off title-winning Counties 2 Eastern Counties League season
Wisbech rounded off their title-winning Counties 2 Eastern Counties 2022-23 League season with an emphatic 51-0 bonus point win over Cambridge III away at Volac Park.
Tries from Solomon Prestidge, Skippy Parsons, Luke Hare, Raimondas Vinksna, Bradley Williams, Kerrie McMullen, Lewis Haddon and Tui Toro (2) - with three conversions from skipper Jack Malkin - ensured the Men in Red finished the final round with 18 wins from 20 games.
That also meant they finished a convincing eight points clear at the top of the table following last week’s title clincher.
The highlight of Friday evening’s game was club stalwart and veteran full back Samuel Anderson’s cameo at loosehead prop, which ensured hehas played for the 1st XV in every position - a truly fantastic and remarkable achievement.
On a night during which Wisbech produced arguably their best performance of the season, back row Brad Williams was named the Wisbech Round Table man of the match.
With the league campaign now complete, Wisbech will now travel to Corby to take on Stewarts & Lloyds RFU in the first round of the RFU National Cup this weekend.
Wisbech vs Cambridge: Sam Anderson, Lewis Haddon, Harry Peters, Gerhard Wessels, Tui Toro, Jack Malkin (c), Zac Lakey, Bradley Williams, Ethan Garford, Raimondas Vinksna, Solomon Prestidge (vc), Skippy Parsons, Kerrie McMullen, Luke Hare, Luke Green (Subs: George Overland, Chris Parry, Olly Mackett)
Elsewhere in recent weeks, the club’s U10s & U11s have played fixtures against Sleaford, Deepings and Peterborough Lions - and on Sunday, the U10s took part in the Stamford RFC Festival. This saw the youngsters play Stamford Lions, Sleaford, Stamford Imps and Lincoln.
Every member of the squad contributed to fantastic team efforts in challenging conditions.
Each of the four games were keenly contested - particularly in the rucks - and there were some very pleasing team tries and some impressive individual scores.
