Wisbech Town Cricket Club seal promotion to East Anglian Premier Cricket League after beating Fakenham

Wisbech will be playing in the East Anglian Premier Cricket League for the first time in the club’s history after defeating Norfolk Champions Fakenham by six runs.

Captain James Williams spoke of his pride and delight after the famous win - which helped to make up for play-off heartbreak nine years ago.

He now believes the future is bright for his side as they make the step up.

“There’s a lot of planning for us to do over the winter now, but it’s huge for us,” he said.

“It’s obviously going to be hard work - it’s the Premier League, we know it’s going to be hard work.

“It’s just a great achievement for some of us that have been trying to get there for many, many years.

“To get there was kind of like a weight lifted off our shoulders as a club.”

Wisbech lost the toss and lost wickets at regular intervals, slipping from 21 - 1 to 48 - 4 and 96 - 7- and were in trouble of not posting a competitive total.

But good late partnerships between Ant Palmer and George Gowler - and a 10th wicket partnership of 32 between Gowler and Jue Dunning - gave Wisbech a chance of winning when they posted 170.

Fakenham, who last week chased down 272 for only 2, found batting no easier - with John Ewart (65) the only batsman to pass 50 in the game.

Fakenham seemed to be in control when they needed only 30 off the last 10 overs, but some excellent bowling from Josh Porter (4-23) kept Wisbech in the game.

And when Fakenham’s captain David Coyle was out caught on the boundary by Wisbech skipper James Williams, Fakenham still needed 10 and Wisbech only needed a single wicket.

Ant Palmer was given the responsibility of bowling the last over, with Fakenham needing only six runs to win - but with the fourth ball of the over, Palmer had Paul Lough out LBW.

Williams admitted he and his team-mates struggled to believe in themselves at points - and were worried the game could become a non-event if they fell too hard behind.

He added: “It’s just sinking in. We had quite a few celebrations on Saturday night. It’s just a great achievement from the lads.

“We got to that play-off spot back in 2013 but we didn’t quite get over the line.

“We just stuck at it - it was a great team performance from the lads.”

“We were in some difficult positions at times, but we dug ourselves out of it - just a great day.”
