Wisbech Town Hockey Club’s men’s 2nd team have been promoted to East Hockey Men’s Division 2 North West after finishing second in Division 3 North West.

Wisbech completed their fixtures on March 26 by thrashing local rivals March Town 8-2 at Harecroft Road.

However, they had to wait for the result of Saturday’s clash between March and Cambridge South 3rd XI before their final position in the table would be confirmed, with Cambridge sitting just one point behind Wisbech in the league table heading into the fixture.

With March picking up a 3-2 win on Saturday, Wisbech’s place in the top two was confirmed - and the team was promoted alongside runaway league winners Ely City, who won 17 of their 18 games this season.

"We’ve seen tremendous commitment from all of our players this season," captain Jonathan Shippey said.

"We’ve had to rotate our squad a lot due to injuries and availability, but we’ve played some great hockey at times, and our final position in the league table reflects that.

"Everyone that has played for the team this season should be very proud."

Wisbech won 13 of their 18 games during the campaign, drawing one game and losing four.

They finished the season having scored the third-most goals (75) and conceding the third-least (30) in the division.

They kicked off their 2021/22 campaign back in September with a 5-2 win over Cambridge South.

Josh Porter and Tom Peggs both grabbed braces on that day,.

Next season, the men will take on Long Sutton 1st XI, Cambridge University 3rd team and Kettering among others, pending confirmation from East Hockey.

"We know it will be difficult next season,” Shippey added.

"But we will be up for the challenge; there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us this summer to prepare."

The promotion puts the 2nd XI just one step lower than the Men’s 1st team, who play in Division 1 North in the East Hockey pyramid.

The 3rd team will play in Division 5 North West next season, while the 4th XI remain in Division 6 North West.

Wisbech Ladies 1st team maintained their place in Women’s Division 1 North, while the 2nd XI finished mid-table in Division 3 North West, and the 3rd team 6th in Division 5 North West.
