Wisbech Cricket Club 2nds defeat Orton Park, with March and Chatteris sides also in action




Fenland’s cricket sides were involved in some thrilling matches over the weekend.

Wisbech Town CC Seconds defeated visitors Orton Park by four wickets on Saturday in the Fenland Citizen’s Cambs & Hunts league game of the weekend.

In Whiting & Partners Division 3, Orton Park totalled 212-3 in their allotted 45 overs with an unbeaten century from Clive Evans.

Wisbech cruised to 216-6 in just 33.2 overs, as Orton had only 10 fielders due to sickness, to grab their first win of the season.

Chris Clark took 1-30, while there were two run outs.

Opener Dom Stannard notched 102, with Tom Buck scoring 39 and Clark 29.

Meanwhile, Wisbech 1st XI sealed a maximum 30-point success at Cambridge St. Giles by 25 runs to go level on points with Whiting & Partners Division 1 leaders Histon, who have played one game fewer.

Jonny Garner smashed seven fours and six sixes as the visitors assembled 280-9 in 50 overs.

Danny Haynes scored 25, Gary Freear 38, Josh Bowers 14, Sam Albutt 32, Jamie Seabrook 11, Australian Ryan Clark 16, Garner 83 off just 51 balls and skipper James Williams 21.

Garner and Williams took the score from a useful 168-6 to 262-7 and set up a highly competitive target.

In reply, Cambridge St. Giles were 255 all out from 46.4 overs after their fifty-scoring openers James Gillespie and Zaheer Hussain compiled 126 for the first wicket.

But the bowlers steadily worked through the rest of the order.

Josh Porter was the tightest of them with 2-30 from 10 overs, with Garner scoring 2-46, Anthony Palmer 1-53, Gary Freear 2-42 and Clark 3-49.

Wisbech 3rds lost at home to Kimbolton 2nds by three wickets in their CCA Junior League 2 North opener.

Wisbech set 159-6 in 40 overs, while Kimbolton racked up 161-7 in 29.3 overs.

Opening bat Nick Osbourne made 38, Harry Sidgewick 33, Joshua Osbourne not out 27 and Mark Buttriss not out 25.

Wickets were shared between Oliver Overland 1-32, Robert Sidgewick 2-42, Buttriss 3-38 and Elliott Peck 1-20.

March Town crashed at Eaton Socon by 89 runs in Whiting Division 1.

Eaton Socon set 240-7 in 50 overs after being pegged back from 125-0.

Samuel Clarke bagged 2-46, Aron Visser 3-30 and David Haslegrave 2-60.

March Town were dismissed for 151 in 38.3 overs. The top five all reached double figures but no one could provide a substantial score.

Adam Conyard made a patient 28 from 77 balls, Udana Ranathunga 13, Visser 12, Brandon Phillips 22 and Ruwan Pitigala 18 as declined from 82-1.

Tommy Howgego hammered 125 as March 2nds triumphed over CCA Senior League Division 1 visitors Royston by 80 runs.

March posted an imposing 268-4 from 45 overs, with Howgego hitting 13 boundaries and three sixes, and opening partner James Hilliard 51 in a stand of 102.

Jacob Gray added 42 and Geoffrey Kirby an unbeaten 19.

Royston were on 188-7 when their innings closed. Mark Deas grabbed 1-28, Joseph Taylor Clark 2-35, Gray 3-37 and Howgego 1-17.

March 3rds conceded to away team Burwell & Exning 2nds, who bagged 20 points in CCA Junior League 3 North.

Second-placed Chatteris lost at Cambridge NCI by just two runs in CCA Senior League Division 1.

Cambridge NCI were dismissed for 145 from 43.3 overs. Archie Palmer took 3-31, the evergreen Peter Munns 1-15 - also off nine overs - Anthony Bamford 3-20 and Shimron Thomas 1-26.

Chatteris fell agonisingly short on 143-9 from their full 45 overs.

Opener Bamford notched 11, Munns 39, Ben Hollis 17, Max Kelly 11, Adam Whiting 13, Connor Morton 11 and Palmer not out 17.

Chatteris 2nds fell to defeat with 131 all out in 32.4 overs at early leaders Chippenham by seven wickets in CCA Junior League 2 North. Chippenham cruised to 136-3 in 28.3 overs.
