Wisbech beaten in first Counties 2 Eastern Counties fixture of the year at Woodbridge

Wisbech Rugby Club suffered a second consecutive away defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing 64-0 to promotion-chasing Suffolk side Woodbridge.

Despite having their fair share of possession and territory, Wisbech were on the back foot for the majority of the game, with Woodbridge showing their well-drilled dominance throughout.

However, The Men in Red showed grit and determination to push back right to the end.

Speaking after the game, Wisbech director of rugby Leonard Veenendaal said: “We did not turn up today, Woodbridge gave the lads a lesson in what happens when you turn up still in Christmas mode.

“It was a frustrating performance from us and we were just not good enough, as a club, we are better than this and set ourselves high standards, which we are not achieving at this stage."

It took seven minutes for the first score when the home side rounded off a strong attacking move.

Woodbridge’s pack asserted themselves early on, their work rate at the breakdown rattled the Men in Red throughout.

With the score at 7-0, within minutes Woodbridge scored their second converted try, it was clear the host wanted it more and to avenge their 24-19 loss earlier the season at Harecroft Road.

Wisbech were struggling to see the ball and make it count when they did, with the host pushing for the bonus point score.

Woodbridge sealed a try bonus point ahead of half-time, giving the host a large margin over the away side.

The second half saw supremacy from the home side as they continued to build their lead.

Wisbech would not be disheartened though and their spirit and will saw them respond, positively battling until the end.

But Woodbridge would have the final say with the match ending 64-0, in a match the Men in Red want to forget as soon as soon as possible.
