Fenmen travel in Extra Preliminary Round to Cogenhoe United

By Pete Woodhouse

Wisbech Town FC begin their competitive season on Saturday with the magic of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Fenmen travel in the extra preliminary round tie to Cogenhoe United, who they faced while in the United Counties League Premier last term.

Neither side has exited this stage of the competition for five seasons, so something will have to give.

The Cooks and the Fenmen will be two of 736 entrants this season hoping to taste glory – or simply a lucrative televised game against a Football League club.

Manager Gary Setchell said: "We're looking forward to it. Cogenhoe won their opening two games and they're in very good form.

"We know if we play well we will have a great chance of progressing. We're playing a team from the top of the league just below us. They fancy taking the scalp of a club in a slightly bigger league."

"The prize money has doubled this year so every Step 3 to 6 club will dream of getting a lucrative run."

The winners of this round are set to pocket in the region of £3,000.

An FA statement said: "The Emirates FA Cup prize fund is set to increase from the 2018-19 season... winning clubs (will) pick up more than double from the competition prize fund.

"The new FA Cup prize fund will benefit all participating clubs at every stage of the competition during the 2018-19 season."

Setchell added of pre-season preparations: "It's been very tough getting players in. We're a lot younger than last year when we had more experience. But it means we have more legs, so it balances out.

"It'll be a long, tough season. At the end of it if we're still a Step 4 side and are competitive it will be something to build on for next season."
