After several runners- up medals in national competitions, Wisbech Hockey Club finally became champions via their Veterans in the final of the over 40’s Shield at the Olympic Park, London.

A great team performance managed a fine send-off for ex-New Zealand international Brad Apted, who is returning to his homeland,

The opposition played the better hockey in the first 20 minutes which led to a well worked short corner goal. Wisbech stepped up their game, leading to the equaliser just before half-time after a mazy run and a reverse stick deflected strike from Apted.

Wisbech in the second half totally dominated the game. Their greater fitness became more evident in the last quarter which led to a short corner goal which was eventually disallowed by the umpires as the ball had brushed off Sam Markillie’s body.

With 10 minutes to go Apted gained possession which he took around the keeper and calmly rolled in, but Norwich equalised from a short corner with two minutes remaining.

In a tense penalty shoot-out Kevin Shippey saved the first attempt and Wisbech went two-up from a Jonathan Shippey flick and a shuffle from Jody Betts. Markillie’s attempt was disallowed due to exceeding the eight second rule. Dragons levelled at 2-2 with Nick Osborn needing to convert to become champions, and he coolly did so.
