Only 11 riders braved the chilly north wind in the Tuesday evening Wisbech event and in the ladies section Becky Murley on 27.03 took over a minute out of her rival Becky Hamilton with 29.22.

Mat McClure was fastest overall followed by John Talbot and Andrew Ward.

Things became a little more interesting at the weekend. It is one of the curious features of British time-trialling that they are run on open roads with normal traffic regulations as well as TT rules and that club riders can find themselves racing against the best in the world. Last year Wisbech vet, Denese Hallahan, raced in the same event as Bradley Wiggins and this year John Talbot rubbed shoulders with international pro and TT specialist, Alex Dowsett, at the Eastern Counties 25 mile championships near Newmarket.

Drivers on the A14 cruising by at 70 mph may not have realised that the national record was being smashed by over a minute in a staggering 44.29 but Talbot was able to measure himself against Essex boy Dowsett and was pleased to post a pb of 57.19.

Results, May 24, 10 miles: Ladies – B Murley 27.03, B Hamilton 28.22, L Camion 29.28. Men – M McClure 21.59, J Talbot 23.11, A Ward 24.30, R Sewell (vet 60+) 24.38D McClure 24.48, A Jenkins 25.24, Paul Willis (vet 50+) 26.30, J Brown (vet 70+) 24.40.
