Wisbech youth teams in action for final matches of 2024

Wisbech Under 7s travelled to face host Swaffham, Fakenham and Crusaders with a lighter-than-normal squad due, to team members having a date with Father Christmas.

Wisbech showed through all of their three games what they have taken from previous matches, from the offset, getting set for defence and also plenty of attacking was achieved.

Under-11 rugby players from Wisbech made the short journey to hosts Swaffham with 14 players and five unavailable this week for the final fixtures of 2024.

The team played three matches and began proceedings with a commanding victory over the home outfit, which was carried on in their next outing against Crusaders.

The last game saw Wisbech take on a combined Swaffham and Crusaders team. The day ended with the Wisbech team not conceding any points and scoring a Santa’s sack full of tries.

Wisbech mini's section plays and trains on Sunday mornings from 10am and has teams in all age groups.

The quality and enthusiasm of the coaches and players are exceptional and unmatched.

Wisbech U15s travelled to Newmarket RUFC for their final fixture for 2024.

After the recent inclement weather, it was nice to see the sun shining and the pitch being in good shape.

From the kick-off, Wisbech's defensive pressure set the tone for the match, the ball being taken into touch for a Wisbech lineout.

Wisbech went into the half-time break with a commanding 38-0 lead and at the final whistle, the score was 79-0 to send the team into the Christmas break by rounding off 2024 in style.

Wisbech U16s took the field for their first home match of the season against a strong North Walsham team.

As was to be expected of one of Norfolk’s premier clubs they were a large, well-organised squad.

Wisbech started well and executed their game plan which paid off as they led for most of the first half.

However, a late score gave Walsham a slender 12-10 lead at the break.

An unfortunate yellow card turned the pressure on Wisbech, an interception try and a last-minute breakaway against a tiring Wisbech side took the game away from the host, with a full-time score of 17-30 that perhaps flattered the visitors.

Coach Steve Drawbridge commented afterwards "Walsham deserved their win as they took their chances when they had them and defended well to deny us points.

"On another day with more match practice, this was a win for Wisbech.

"We welcomed back some returning players for the first time this season and this will bolster the squad for the 2nd half of the season.

"We are rightly proud of the performance today with commitment and effort deserving of a better result, thus far we have played two of the region’s top clubs and came away with a convincing win and a narrow loss.

"Our squad is developing and is showing huge potential for the rest of the season, well done to our 16s."
