Wisbech youngsters host their counterparts from St Ives

Wisbech U11s welcomed a physical-looking St Ives team to Harecroft road on Sunday to play four 15-minute quarters.

After Wisbech completely dominated the away fixture, the team were under no illusions that St Ives would offer a better test this time around.

Wisbech got off to a great start moving the ball well and taking advantage of some weak defence, running in several individual tries.

St Ives came back at Wisbech exploiting some soft tackling efforts but the dominance up front was restored with the physicality of the Wisbech forwards.

The Wisbech scrum-halves were tenacious and others controlled the games ensuring the back line where well organised and getting the ball moved out wide.

The coaches were pleased as the work done in training is starting to show, especially the fitness.

Meanwhile, a combined U12/13 Wisbech side also hosted St Ives at Harecroft Road.

Wisbech had a squad of 10 available for what was expected to be a competitive game and across the four games, the teams scored five tries each.

Both sides showed that they have strong and elusive individual runners and that they are teams with the skill sets to put together extended phases of play.

When tackles were completed the rucks were keenly contested and there were numerous turnovers of possession.

All the lads contributed to a commendable team effort.

Wisbech coach Dave Dobson congratulated the eight St Ives players who put on a red shirt and was impressed with their skills and determination and thanked them for the hard-fought contest.

He also expressed his thanks and gratitude to the families on the touchline from both clubs for their appreciative and constructive support for the young players.

The age-grade youth side continues to train on Wednesday evenings from 5.45pm to 7pm or Sundays at 10am.

If your child is currently playing or has never played before why not pop down to Wisbech Rugby Club and come give it a try.
