World title eliminator for Chatteris super featherweight fighter Jordan Gill
Jordan Gill could be following up last month’s magnificent knockout victory over Michael Conlan in Belfast with a world title fight later this year.
The Chatteris Super Featherweight boxer will top the bill when he steps in the ring against home fighter Zelfa Barrett at the AO Manchester Arena on Saturday, April 13 for a world title eliminator.
‘The Thrill’ put his career on the line when he boxed for the first time in more than a year and sensationally beat two-time world title challenger Conlan in Northern Ireland in December, and now he knows he is just one more win from achieving his dream.
Gill, 29, has won 28 of his 31 fights since turning professional in 2012, but this all-British fight will be his biggest challenge, against a fighter whose only two defeats in 32 contests were in World and European title fights.
Barrett, 30, a cousin of Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams, will be a tough opponent, but Gill told the Citizen: “I have had setbacks in my career but this is the fight that I just have to win as there is a World title shot for me if I come out on top.
"In my last fight, I proved that I should have moved up to super featherweight a few years ago. I felt so much stronger and you could see that with me putting down Conlan so early and then it was just a matter of time before I got to him again.
"Zelfa has already challenged for the IBF and it's going to be an all-action fight."
After beating Conlan, lifelong Peterborough United fan Gill called out two-time super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina and said he would love to fight the Welshman at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Gill also opened a new state of the art gym in Wisbech shortly after the Conlan fight and will be doing some of his training for the Barrett fight at the impressive new facility.
