Wright puts March back on winning trail
East Men’s League 2N
March Town 4, Cambridge University 3rds 3
In March’s first fixture after the Christmas break they started the second half of the season in the same way they finished the first – with a well fought victory.
The visitors took the lead when the ball fell kindly to an unmarked player at the back post.
March did eventually find the equaliser as a Jacob Fraser shot somehow went in. Cambridge retook the lead but Jody Betts coolly fired home to make it 2-2 at the break.
The second half was a very even contest as both sides went for the victory. Cambridge managed to take a 3-2 lead after March failed to clear their lines.
The pivotal moment came midway through the half when Cambridge were reduced to 10 men. March capitalised as Ben Wright scored a quick brace. Ashley Welland assisted both goals. The game finished with both sides earning yellow cards: March’s captain Mathew Bamford was guilty of an appalling challenge while Cambridge had two players yellow-carded due to very bad tackles.
March will now aim for promotion. They host Cambs City 4s next weekend, 3pm start.
Man of the match: Ashley Welland.
